Diane E. White (Field), 82, passed away peacefully on January 15, 2026, in Cape Elizabeth, Maine. Born on November 20, 1943, in Norwalk, Connecticut, Diane lived a life marked by simplicity, creativity, and a deep reverence for the natural world.
A graduate of the University of Maine at Orono with a Bachelor of Arts degree, Diane cultivated a lifelong love of learning and exploration. Her connection to Maine remained strong throughout her life, especially through her frequent adventures in Acadia National Park. Whether hiking wooded trails, boating along the coast, or riding her mountain bike through Bar Harbor and the carriage roads of Acadia, Diane found joy and inspiration in the outdoors.
Diane had an artist's soul and a keen eye for beauty in overlooked places. She was known for collecting seaglass and driftwood from the shorelines she loved so dearly, transforming them into unique art pieces that reflected her appreciation for nature's quiet treasures. Her passion for wildlife extended beyond her artwork—she was an avid bird-watcher and enjoyed immersing herself in nature programs that deepened her understanding of the world around her.
Her hobbies were as vibrant as her spirit: hiking rugged trails, building boats with care and precision, mountain biking with enthusiasm well into her later years, and savoring simple pleasures like a scoop of ice cream on a warm day. Diane lived simply and made do with little, always finding value where others might not look.
Faith was an integral part of Diane's life. She knew her Bible well and held a deep love for Jesus that guided her actions and outlook. Her spirituality was quiet but steadfast—a source of strength that shaped how she moved through the world.
Diane's legacy lives on through her loving family. She is survived by her children: John (Randy) White and his wife Rachel; Susan Sweeney and her husband Matthew; grandchildren: John (Ben) White and his significant other Sam and her son Jack; Brittany (White) Pierce; Rory White; Morgan Sweeney; Riley Sweeney; and Molly Sweeney; as well as great-grandchildren Griffin Pierce and Henry Pierce.
Her presence will be deeply missed by those who knew her—whether they shared a trail walk in Acadia or simply enjoyed one of her handmade creations. May her memory bring comfort to all who cherished her gentle strength and adventurous heart.
