Donald Michael James passed away on January 15, 2026, in El Dorado Hills, California, at the age of 79.
Born on August 21, 1946, in Casper, Wyoming, Don's childhood was shaped by frequent relocations due to his parents' military service. Moving often taught him and his sisters, how to make new friends, let go gracefully, and begin again—lessons that became hallmarks of his character throughout his life.
Don graduated from Vacaville High School, Class of 1964, and proudly joined the United States Navy in 1966. He served in Vietnam as a Navy hospital corpsman attached to a Marine field hospital, providing compassionate medical care in challenging and dangerous conditions. His service reflected both courage and an unwavering commitment to helping others.
After returning home, Don continued his calling in healthcare, becoming a Registered Nurse. He devoted 33 years of his career to North Bay Medical Center, where he was respected for his skill, dedication, and calm, steady presence.
Don was a devoted husband, father, stepfather, and grandfather. He is survived by his wife of 32 years, Jackie Phillips; his daughter Shanna Lepore (mother Barbara James) and her husband Dan Lepore; his stepchildren Ryan Phillips and wife Marjan Phillips, and Heather Clanton and husband Wes Clanton. He was the proud and loving Papa to his grandchildren Ethan and Ella Lepore, Arianna and Bo Phillips, and Tyler and Maddie Clanton.
A forever-faithful San Francisco 49ers fan, Don also loved golfing, fast cars, and time spent with his family—especially his grandchildren, who brought him immense joy. Known for his warm smile, infectious laugh, and unmistakable Donald Duck voice, Don had a way of lighting up a room and leaving lasting memories with everyone he met.
Don's life was defined by service, loyalty, and love. He will be deeply missed and forever remembered by those who knew and loved him.
A private Celebration of Life was held by his family. Donations can be made to the Alzheimer's Association.
