Donald Lane

Donald "Don" Lane, 86, passed away peacefully on February 19, 2026, in Raleigh, North Carolina. Born on March 5, 1939, in Washington, Pennsylvania, to Donald Simpson Lane Sr. and Margaret Spillman Lane, Don lived a life defined by kindness, inclusivity, and a genuine love for others.

Don enjoyed a fulfilling career in newspaper syndication until his retirement in 2005. His work with United Media took him across the country, where he cultivated countless friendships that enriched his life. Known for his gentle and selfless nature, Don never met a stranger and left a lasting impression on everyone he encountered.

A devoted family man, Don was predeceased by his beloved wife of 43 years, Susan Smith Lane. Together they shared a bond of love and purpose, including their active involvement at Community United Church of Christ. The church served as a second home for Don and Susan for many years as they regularly volunteered and contributed to their community.

Don is survived by his daughter Nancy Reid and her husband John; his grandson Andrew Joyce and Andrew’s wife Hannah; brothers-in-law Chuck Rohrer (Karen) and Mark Smith (Nancy); sisters-in-law Judy Shaugnessy, Ellen Smith Kasper, and the late Melinda Rohrer; as well as many cherished nieces and nephews. He also leaves behind dear friends who became family: Dan and Judy Vivarelli; Cara, Todd, and Lillian O’Neill; John and Brooke Boyer; Larry and Susann Hodges; Karen King (and her late husband Matt King).

In recent years, Don found joy in the community at Springmoor Retirement Village. There he made new friends who will fondly remember him sitting on his cigar-smoking bench with his loyal canine companion, Ziva. His warmth and humor brought light to all during these later chapters of his life.

Don loved spending time with good friends, golfing, traveling the world with Susan by his side, and spreading kindness wherever he went. His legacy of generosity and compassion is a testament to the way he lived his life.

A Celebration of Life will be held on March 8, 2026, at 4:00 PM at Springmoor LCC, South Village Terrace Room (1500 Sawmill Rd., Raleigh). In honor of Don’s memory, please pay kindness forward or donate to a charity close to your heart. May his memory bring comfort to all who knew him.
