Donald Reece Rathel

1932 - 2026

Donald R. Rathel passed away on January 23, 2026, at the age of 93 at Bay Harbor Nursing Home in Salisbury, Maryland.
He was the son of the late Katherine Moore Osterwalder and Royce Rathel, and stepson of the late Hans Osterwalder. He was preceded in death by his sister, Doris Martin; his brother, Calvin Rathel; and his oldest son, Donald R. Rathel Jr. (“Rick”).
He is survived by his beloved wife of 75 years, Yvonne “Bonnie” Rathel; his daughter, Donna Cantwell (Michael); his sons, Darrell Rathel and Dwayne Rathel (Julie); six grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews; and a special brother-in-law, Ron Nelson.
Don held various jobs in his early years, including working as a veterinary assistant for Rufus Johnson. He later discovered his lifelong trade while working with Carl Vaughn and Parker & Reddish, who taught him the craft of floor sanding. At just 24 years old, he started his own business, Don Rathel Floor Sanding & Refinishing Enterprises, which he proudly operated until the age of 84.
Throughout his career, Don worked with and for many in the community. In addition to his flooring business, he owned and operated a cleaning service for 24 years, maintaining banks, doctors’ offices, and car dealerships, and employing many family members and friends along the way.
Don was a dedicated member of the Salisbury Fire Department, where he volunteered his time driving the ambulance and serving the community. He was elected Vice President and later President from 1967 to 1968.
Don loved the Lord and was also a devoted member of Park Seventh-day Adventist Church in Salisbury, where he held several roles and generously gave his time painting and making repairs to the Church building.
Don was known for his selflessness and generosity. He never stopped helping others—neighbors, family, and church members alike—never expecting anything in return.
He leaves behind a legacy as a loving husband and father, a hardworking businessman, and a man who treated everyone with kindness, respect, and compassion.
Don donated his body to science. A Celebration of Life will be held in the Spring.
