Donna Marie Cumberland, April 12, 1977 - January 14, 2025
Donna Marie Cumberland passed away from cervical cancer on January 14, 2025 at her sister's home in Dallas, Texas. Following her cancer diagnosis in Baltimore, Maryland at Johns Hopkins in September 2024, Donna moved to Dallas to be with family. In her final months, she was surrounded by love and enjoyed daily pampering with her favorites - fresh coffee, scrambled eggs, ice cream and all the scary TV shows and movies the streaming world had to offer.
Donna was born April 12, 1977 in Baltimore, Maryland. She had an adventurous, high-energy spirit, always up for trying new things and leading others into trouble. A loyal sister, she was also very protective of her younger brother and sisters and made sure everyone in west Baltimore knew it.
At about 19 years old, she met James "Jim" Turner in Baltimore at a bar when she was refused service for being underage. Overhearing the encounter, Jim told her he had a bar and he'd serve her. That was the beginning of a lifelong roller coaster of a love story. Many will remember Donna bopping about Turner's Bar on Cross Street in Federal Hill, trying in vain to turn a neighborhood beer bar into a cosmopolitan cocktail lounge.
While she struggled with addiction and bi-polar disorder for decades, Donna will be remembered for her kind heart, her warm smile and her generous spirit. She was our big sister and we love her.
Donna is preceded in death by her life partner, James C. Turner; son, Tyler Peyton; mother, Patricia (née Nearhood) Collins; and stepfather, Norman Collins, Jr. She is survived by her siblings, Kimberly (née Logan) King (Derek), Sean Collins, and Tracey Collins (Isaac Williams); her partner, James Lewis; and a niece, nephews and extended family.
To honor Donna, please buy a cup of coffee or a sandwich for someone who needs it, play your favorite song and dance like nobody's watching, and take a deep breath and a moment to appreciate life and those who care about you. It's more people than you think. And if you can, adopt a pet or donate to your local animal shelter.
