Dorothy Mae (Gould) Barrey, 90, of Richmond, Virginia died Friday, February 20, 2026, at the Masonic Home of Virginia, Richmond, Virginia. Dorothy was born August 14, 1935, to James Abram Gould and Sybil Wainscott Gould.
Dorothy grew up on a tobacco farm in Dry Ridge, Kentucky. She was in the first class to graduate from Grant County High School in 1954. While working for Trans World Airlines (TWA) at the Cincinnati Airport she met Nathan, her husband of 56 years. In 1967, the family relocated to Berryville, Virginia.
Dorothy worked while raising four children and lived a life marked by self-reliance and creativity. She was a pioneer woman who raised dairy goats, chickens, and meat rabbits. A gifted cook, she enjoyed preparing meals from scratch. Sunday dinner often featured pot roast, vegetables, and biscuits with apple pie for dessert.
She loved gardening, both vegetables and flowers and created beautiful landscapes at every home she lived in throughout Clarke County. Many summer evenings were spent snapping green beans on the front porch in preparation for canning.
Dorothy is best remembered as a gifted quilter, earning numerous blue ribbons at both the Clarke County Fair and the Virginia State Fair. After retiring from federal employment in 1997, she especially enjoyed spending time with her quilting guild friends.
Dorothy is survived by her stepchildren Suzanne Thompson and Stephanie Presgraves (Kenneth), her children, Mark Barrey, Jonathan Barrey (Barbara), and Jennifer Roszelle (Mark); her grandchildren, David Johnston, Lauren Kirkland (Bradley), Brittany Palmer, Mariana Roszelle, Lacy Williams, William Williams (Jenny), Taran Williams, and many great grandchildren. She is also survived by her siblings Janet Gould, David Gould, and Cindy Combs.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Nathan Malcolm Barrey, her parents James and Sybil Gould, her sisters Elois Sears, Wanda Purcell, Kimberly Hall; and her granddaughter Alyssa Presgraves Helfenstein.
A Celebration of Life is planned for 2:00 pm on Saturday, March 28, 2026, at Spirit and Word Fellowship, 1275 Tasker Road, Stephens City, VA. A private graveside service will follow at a later date.
