Douglas H. (Doug) Gibson died December 18, 2025 in Sarasota, FL at the age of 79.
Doug, son of Angus (Mike) and Dorothy Gibson, was born on February 25, 1946 in Albany, New York. Doug grew up in Ramsey, NJ where he made many life long friends.
Doug discovered Sarasota as an art student at Ringling College of Art a Design in 1964. He went on to earn his BFA and MFA at the University of Massachusetts, Amherst. During his time as a painter Doug was inspired by clouds, sunsets and landscapes. One of his happiest places was the extended family cabin known fondly as the Gibson Camp in Cossayuna, New York where he would watch the sunset every night from the porch.
Doug was an avid car lover and worked in sales at several dealerships in Sarasota, ending his career at BMW of Sarasota.
Doug’s kindness and humor immediately put people at ease and helped endear him to the hearts of so many. He loved his family deeply, including the many animals they rescued over the years. Doug leaves behind his wife Joan Gibson, daughters Kelly Brown of Pittsboro, NC and Kate Gibson of Sarasota, son Jeff Daviau of Tampa and his wife Tammi Daviau, sister Deborah Hamilton of Queensbury, NY, two granddaughters, two great grandchildren and devoted nieces and nephews.
A celebration of life will be held February 22, 2026 1-5 PM at Sahib Shriners in Sarasota, FL. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to St Jude Children’s Research Hospital.
