With profound grace, dignity, and unwavering faith, Mrs. Edith Nokomis Harris-Bernard completed her earthly journey on January 8, 2026. Born September 6, 1926, in Surry County, Virginia, Edith lived a life defined by scholarship, Christian service, and devotion to family and community.
A distinguished educator and lifelong learner, Edith earned degrees from Elizabeth City State University and American University, and enjoyed a notable career with D.C. Public Schools, Howard University, the University of the District of Columbia, and the University of the West Indies. A published author and global citizen, her passion for education led to a six-year missionary appointment in Jamaica and Grand Cayman, where she served as a Christian Education Consultant to orphans and prisoners.
A woman of deep faith, Edith was an original "M Street Member" of Peoples Congregational UCC in Washington, D.C., and later a pillar of Saint John Baptist Church in Williamsburg, Virginia. She was also active in historical preservation, serving James City County and the Smithsonian Institution, and was recognized with a Historical Preservation Award.
Edith was preceded in death by her parents, Rev. Weldon Herbert George, Sr. and Cora Lee George; her husbands, Lorenzo Harris and Legert Bernard; and several siblings. She leaves to cherish her memory her daughter, Sharon Montgomery (Wilbur); granddaughters, Taylor Montgomery Khanlou (Soroush) and Sydney Montgomery Woodworth (Connor); a great-granddaughter; sisters, Mary L. Stewart and Yvonne J. Martin; and a host of loving relatives and friends.
Her life was well lived, her course faithfully finished, and her legacy enduring.
A celebration of life will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, February 7, 2026, at 1397 Penniman Rd in Williamsburg, VA 23185.
