Edith Lewis Stewart

1933 - 2026

Edith Lewis Stewart of Elizabethtown passed away peacefully in the SECU Hospice House in Bolivia on Friday, March 13th after a long and full life surrounded by the love of her family. She was born December 23, 1933, in Robeson County, North Carolina, to the late Berry Lewis and Myrtice Warwick Lewis.

Though she had many siblings, Edith was always quick to say she was her daddy's "pet." She was preceded in death by her sisters, Thay White, Jean Gooden, Martha Bridgers, Hannah Rose Gooden, and Glenys Thompson; and her brothers, Coegill Lewis and Rusty Lewis. She is survived by one brother, Autry Lewis.

Edith was also preceded in death by her beloved husband of 52 years, Delbert Stewart.

She leaves behind two children, Cindy Lockner (Adam) and Ray Stewart. She was a treasured grandmother to Michelle Register, Wesley Register, Jessie Howell (Aaron), Amanda Smith (Daniel), and, last but certainly not least, her "pet," Kevin Stewart (Joanna). She also leaves behind 11 great-grandchildren, two great-great-grandchildren, and a special nephew, Tommy White.

Throughout her life, Edith worked alongside her family as an owner and secretary of Elizabethtown Salvage Yard and also worked as a bail bondsman. She was known for her strong work ethic and independent spirit.

Edith loved searching for and collecting antiques, tending to her beautiful flower gardens during the warmer months, and cooking meals that brought her family together. She especially enjoyed giving tours of her home and proudly showing visitors her quilts, always quick to remind them that each one was hand stitched.

Anyone who knew Edith knew she was a sassy lady who never hesitated to speak her mind. Despite her spirited personality, she had a deeply caring heart and would come running anytime her family needed her.

She was a longtime member of White Oak Family Worship Center, where she faithfully served as a greeter and loved welcoming others with a smile and hug.

In her final weeks, Edith was blessed to have family stay with her around the clock so she could spend as many of her last days as possible in the home she loved so dearly.

Her family will remember her for her strength, humor, and the deep love she had for those closest to her. She will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved her.

A memorial service was held Sunday, March 22 at 2:30 pm at White Oak Family Worship Center.
