Edward Francis "Ed" Hayes, 79, passed away on February 10, 2026, in Crystal Lake, Illinois with his children by his side. Born on November 14, 1946, in Chicago, Illinois, Ed lived a life full of laughter, loyalty, and unapologetic charm.

Ed was a man who wore his heart—and his opinions—on his sleeve. Known for his sharp wit and sarcastic humor, he had an uncanny ability to hold court. Ed made sure everyone around him knew exactly where he stood.

A proud man from his Sweet Home, Chicago Ed remained fiercely loyal to the White Sox and the Bears, even when they tested that loyalty year after year. He was also a devoted fan of Jeopardy! and never met a crossword puzzle he couldn't conquer—or at least argue with. A self-proclaimed "sale whore", he never passed up a yellow sticker, especially on meat, which he stockpiled for many magnificent Meat Fests! Ed was also loyal to the one who got away--Heather Graham.

Drafted into the Army during his younger years, Ed served his time begrudgingly but came away with unforgettable stories and friendships that left their mark on him.

Ed's generosity was legendary. He was always ready to slide a twenty across the bar for an "orange whip" or three. A shameless flirt and consummate gossip, he could never be trusted with a secret but was forgiven for this foible.

Above all else, Ed's greatest pride and joy were his children—Brendan (Lillian) Hayes, Maggie (Klay) Kappler, Justine (Trey) Elling, and DJ (Amber) Hayes—whom he often said of "even if they weren't mine, I'd say they are GOOD kids." His love extended deeply to his grandchildren Lauren, Daniel, Kai, Imogen, Vivian, Calvin, Sebastian and Rubie. He adored them all and took great pleasure in spoiling them and ensuring they had enough "walking around money".

Ed now joins his beloved parents Daniel and Mary Hayes and siblings Jimmy, Nancy and Richie in rest. Though gone from this world, his stories and wit—will echo in the hearts of those who knew him.

May his memory bring comfort to those who loved him.

A Celebration of Life will be held on February 14, 2026, from 06:00 PM to 10:00 PM at More Brewery 13980 Automall Dr. Huntley, IL. Hawaiian shirts or flannels encouraged, as it reflects Pop's yearly wardrobe rotation and his appreciation of both warmth and whimsy. Drinks and light appetizers are on Pop, as he would want us to "enjoy the crap out of ourselves".

Also, Heather--he's still waiting on your call.
