Edward Arthur "Chip" Hedrick, 79, passed away peacefully on February 25, 2026, in Raleigh, North Carolina. Born on October 29, 1946, in Tampa, Florida, Chip lived a life marked by service, dedication, and an enduring passion for helping others.
Chip was born in Tampa, FL as the son of Samuel A. Hedrick and Blanche Dean Hedrick. He was raised in Lynchburg, VA, later lived for a time in Portland, OR and eventually settled in Raleigh, NC. After graduating high school, he answered the call to serve his country by joining the United States Navy. As a medic for the Marine Corps during the Vietnam War, Chip provided combat medical support and emergency care on the front lines—a role that would shape his lifelong commitment to healing and service. Chip was awarded the National Defense Service Medal, Vietnam Service Medal, and Republic of Vietnam Campaign Medal.
Following his military service, Chip pursued higher education with determination and purpose. He earned a Bachelor of Science degree from Alderson Broaddus University before continuing his studies at the University of Nebraska, where he obtained a Master’s degree in Physician Assistant Studies. As part of one of the first graduating classes in this emerging profession, Chip became a trailblazer in the field of physician assistants.
For over 40 years, Chip dedicated himself to sports medicine and orthopedics as a physician assistant. His expertise and compassionate care earned him widespread respect among colleagues and patients alike. In 2003, he was honored as North Carolina Physician Assistant of the Year—a testament to his exceptional contributions to healthcare. A lifetime member of the North Carolina Medical Society and a founding member of the Society for the Preservation of Physician Assistant History, Chip also held the distinction of being named a Distinguished Fellow by the American Academy of Physician Assistants.
Chip’s impact extended beyond clinical practice. He generously shared his skills with athletes from teams such as the Raleigh Icecaps, Carolina Mudcats, and Wakefield High School Wolverines. His dedication to their well-being reflected his unwavering commitment to excellence in every endeavor.
Outside of his professional achievements, Chip embraced life with enthusiasm and joy. He had a keen eye for photography and was an avid fan of Oregon Ducks football. Music filled his days with happiness, as did time spent behind the wheel of his cherished BMW convertibles or enjoying a glass of fine wine. Chip also enjoyed spirited conversations about politics. Known affectionately as the grandpa to neighborhood children, Chip delighted in fostering connections within his community. His beloved corgis were constant companions who brought him endless joy.
Above all else, Chip cherished his family. He is survived by his devoted wife of 57 years Linda Kaye Hedrick; his sons Jasen Hedrick (and wife Shannon) and Sean Hedrick; and countless friends whose lives he touched through kindness and humility. Preceding him in death were his parents Samuel A. Hedrick and Blanche Dean Hedrick as well as his brother Samuel “Sam” Hedrick Jr.
Chip will be remembered not only for his remarkable accomplishments but also for his hard-working nature, humility, and willingness to lend a helping hand whenever needed. His legacy is one of compassion and dedication—a life well-lived that leaves an indelible mark on all who knew him.
May Chip Hedrick’s memory bring comfort to those who mourn his passing while inspiring others to live with purpose and generosity in their own lives.
