Edward B. Portnoy, MD, age 76, of Westlake Village, California, passed away peacefully on December 28, 2025. He was born on February 7, 1949, in Newark, New Jersey.
Dr. Portnoy was a beloved and dedicated physician who practiced internal medicine in Westlake Village, California, for more than 45 years. Over the course of his long and distinguished career, he touched countless lives through his exceptional medical care, patience, kindness, and genuine ability to listen. In addition to his private practice, he served as the Medical Director of Access TLC Hospice for 18 years, where his compassion and commitment to dignity at the end of life left a lasting impact on patients and families alike.
Dr. Portnoy was a graduate of Rutgers University in New Brunswick, NJ and SUNY Downstate Medical School in Brooklyn, New York. Medicine was not just his profession, but his calling, and he was deeply respected by colleagues and cherished by patients who trusted him with their care for decades.
Outside of medicine, Ed loved sports, especially basketball, and was a lifelong and devoted fan of the San Francisco Giants. He valued time with family and friends and will be remembered for his warmth, steady presence, and quiet humor.
He is survived by his wife, Nora McIntire; his first wife, Judy Portnoy; his children, Jennifer Portnoy Swan (Cameron), Josh Portnoy (Meredith), and Samantha Portnoy Ashby (Daniel); his sister, Debbie Berlanstein (Bruce); and his grandchildren, Taylor Portnoy, Cy Portnoy, Abram Knowlton, and Nate Knowlton along with several nieces and nephews. Dr. Portnoy will be deeply missed by his family, friends, patients, and all who had the privilege of knowing him. His legacy of compassion, dedication, and service will endure. A celebration of life will be planned in February.
