Edward Donald Thirkell passed away peacefully on February 3, 2026, at the age of 85. Ed lived a rich and meaningful life defined by curiosity, generosity, adventure, and deep connections with the people he loved.

Born in San Mateo, California, Ed was raised in Burlingame, a community that shaped his early years and remained close to his heart. He graduated from Burlingame High School and went on to attend the University of California, Berkeley, where his lifelong love of learning took root. He later earned his law degree from UC Berkeley School of Law (Boalt Hall).

Following law school, Ed served his country in the United States Army, where he was stationed at Fort Ord and served as a prosecutor. His military service was a source of quiet pride and reflected his strong sense of duty, fairness, and commitment to justice.

Since 1976, Ed focused his private practice on estate planning, estate, trust, and conservatorship administration, as well as related litigation. Clients and colleagues alike respected him for his sharp legal mind, meticulous preparation, and unwavering ethical standards.

While Ed enjoyed a long and respected legal career, those who knew him best remember him for who he was beyond his work. He was a natural teacher and storyteller, someone who loved sharing ideas, asking thoughtful questions, and engaging in lively conversation. Whether discussing history, law, travel, or a book he had just finished, Ed brought warmth and enthusiasm to every exchange.

Ed embraced life with style and joy. He especially loved boating on Lake Tahoe aboard his treasured Riva boat, where some of his happiest days were spent on the water with friends and family. An avid skier and passionate traveler, Ed explored the world with curiosity and appreciation, always eager to experience new cultures and places. A devoted reader, he never stopped learning and delighted in passing along knowledge to others.

Ed treasured his friendships, especially his longtime Bella Union campmates from the Bohemian Club, whose camaraderie and shared traditions brought him immense happiness over the years. He valued loyalty, wit, and shared experiences, and he maintained close friendships across decades.

Ed is survived by his beloved husband of 25 years, David Street, with whom he shared a life filled with love, adventure, and companionship.

Ed is also survived by his mother-in-law, Shelby Street; sister-in-law, Jana Johnson; nephew, Street Johnson (Julie Johnson); nieces, Sarah Johnson and Hannah Johnson; and great-nieces, Elsie Johnson, Madeline Johnson, and Scarlett Johnson. He is also survived by his nephew, Alexis Schmidt and niece, Angela Schmidt Lindsay.

Ed will be remembered for his sharp mind, warm heart, generosity of spirit, and the joy he found in both quiet reflection and shared experiences. He leaves behind a legacy of curiosity, kindness, and connection that will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved him.

A celebration of Ed's life will be planned for a later date. Details will be shared with family and friends when arrangements are finalized.
