Edwin Walter Dews

Retired Navy Captain Edwin Walter Dews, age 79, of Salisbury, North Carolina, passed away peacefully at his home on February 3, 2026 after a lengthy. Edwin was born and raised in Shreveport, Louisiana (Caddo Parish) and lived in Salisbury, North Carolina for many years.

Edwin Dews was a highly decorated Navy Captain, having spent 27 years in the Navy, primarily as a P3 Pilot. He retired in 1995. He was an avid woodworker and woodturner who enjoyed spending time in his shop.

Edwin was preceded in death by his parents Helen Brock Dews and Herbert Dews of Shreveport, Louisiana.

Edwin is survived by his wife, Poppy-Kathryn van Ameringen Dews of Salisbury, North Carolina; three children, Robert (Jennifer) Dews of Middleburg, FL; Jennifer (Bryan) Weiskopf of Keystone Heights, FL; Elizabeth Dews Baxter of Green Cove Springs, FL; four step-children, Megan (Hector) Flores of Salisbury, NC, Stephen (Rachel) Miniea of Fernandina Beach, FL; Molly Miniea of Salisbury, NC and Nikolas Hughes of Salisbury, NC. He is also survived by one sister, Clare (Jack) Cody of Oregon, and one brother, Roy (Candace) Dews of Louisiana; and many grandchildren and great grandchildren.


A memorial service honoring Captain Dews was held on February 14, 2026 at Milford Hills United Methodist Church in Salisbury, North Carolina. He will be greatly missed by his loved ones.
