Eileen L. Benner, age 78, of Gilbertsville, Pennsylvania, passed away peacefully on December 29, 2025.
She was born on May 15, 1947, in Allentown, Pennsylvania, and grew up in the Telford area. She was the only child of the late Grant and Florence "Dolly" Hagey.
Eileen graduated from Pennridge High School, and then went on to receive her Nursing Diploma from Grand View Hospital School of Nursing and was a nurse for more than 40 years. Her working experience was mostly in hospitals, from the CCU to the ICU, then to the ever exciting world of the Emergency Room where she loved to be part of the action, being able to tell some pretty crazy stories working third shift. The last years of her working life were spent in northern Maine, retiring in 2011. She prided herself on being very knowledgeable in the medical field, and very good at her job. She never forgot any of her training and experience, that being displayed in her many "talk shop" conversations she had well past her retirement.
She was an avid reader, mostly enjoying her crime/mystery stories. She also enjoyed traveling, knitting, playing cards with a Gin and Tonic in hand (Bridge, Rummy, Pinnacle to name a few) and watching Philadelphia sports. She enjoyed and cheered for the Philadelphia Eagles, but her heart truly lied with her favorite team of all time, the Philadelphia Phillies. She watched the games on TV faithfully and was one of their #1 fans.
Eileen grew up a dog lover, rescuing her collies Flash and Bandit. But then, later in life, her heart was stolen by the three feline sisters she adopted from Maine, Lola, Lovie and Luna, and she never looked back.
Eileen is survived by her two children, Scott Benner and wife, Claudia, and Tara Mathias (Benner), and husband, Ryan; granddaughters Lindsay, Emme and Raegan.
To honor her years long time in the medical field, and her respect for it, her body was donated to further research the illness that was part of her daily life the last few years. Her Autoimmune Encephalitis diagnosis left doctors at a loss of how to treat her based on limited information and research on the condition. Her ashes will be buried with her parents at Whitemarsh Memorial Cemetery, and a Celebration of LIfe will be planned, at a later date.
