Elaine Z. Mercer
September 21, 1920 - February 2, 2026
Elaine Z. Mercer passed away peacefully on February 2, 2026, at the remarkable age of 105. Born on September 21, 1920, in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, Elaine lived a life defined by curiosity, compassion, and an enduring sense of humor. She spent the last 65 years of her life in Virginia, where she built her career, community, and family life.
Having lived through the Great Depression, Elaine understood the value of hard work and the importance of saving for the things that truly matter in life—lessons she carried with her and quietly passed on to those around her.
Elaine was a dedicated educator, serving as an ESL teacher for adult learners in Fairfax County until the age of 90. She believed deeply in the power of learning to connect people and empower new beginnings. A lifelong learner herself, she was a proud graduate of Old Dominion University and George Mason University.
Brilliant, funny, and unfailingly kind, Elaine brought warmth and generosity to every room she entered. She remained mentally and socially active throughout her 105 years, delighting in games, activities, and the company of others almost to the very end. Her sharp wit and joyful spirit never dimmed.
Elaine was preceded in death by her beloved husband, John M. Mercer. She is survived by her daughters, Monique King (Tom King) and Christina Dorsey (Randy Dorsey); her grandchildren, Jordan (Dorothy), Andrew, Natalie, and Dylan; and her cherished great-grandchild, Lisheng.
Elaine's legacy lives on through the countless students she encouraged, the family she loved fiercely, and the example she set of a life fully and generously lived.
