Eleanor Clarke, born on November 6, 1931, in Staten Island, New York, passed away peacefully on January 23, 2026, in Louisville, Kentucky. She was 94 years old.

Eleanor’s life was marked by resilience, service, and a deep appreciation for the opportunities she embraced throughout her journey. As a young child in 1939, she and her mother escaped from Germany with the help of the Danish people—an act of kindness for which she remained profoundly grateful throughout her life.

She proudly served her country as a member of the United States Navy during the Korean Conflict. Following her military service, Eleanor pursued higher education with determination and purpose. She began her studies at Hunter College in New York City and later earned degrees from Jefferson Community College and the University of Louisville in Kentucky.

Her professional life reflected her commitment to community and care. Eleanor retired from both Wesley Community House and Oaklawn, where she dedicated herself to supporting others through meaningful work.

Eleanor was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Sterling J. Clarke; her son, Sterling Lawrence (Larry) Clarke; and her parents, August and Margaret Lorentz.

She is survived by her daughter Susan Clarke Lea (Alex); grandson Matthew Lea (Carrie); great-grandsons Sterling and Christian; and dear friend Lovell Embree (Josh), all of whom brought joy to her later years.

A private burial will be held at Zachary Taylor Cemetery.

May Eleanor Clarke’s memory bring comfort to those who knew and loved her.
