Eleanor Evelyn "Elie" Kemp (née Popewiny), spunky at 93 years young, passed away on January 22, 2026, in Easton, Pennsylvania at Northampton Post Acute Rehab Center. Born on April 21, 1932, in Passaic, New Jersey, Eleanor lived a vibrant and spirited life that reflected her deep roots and unwavering character.
The youngest of seven children born to Mary and Adam Popewiny, Eleanor was the last of her generation. She was predeceased by her beloved husband Calvin Kemp; her brothers Michael, Harold, Stanley, Adam, and Joey Popewiny; and her sister Julia Ritoch. Her passing marks the end of an era for a family rich in heritage and resilience.
Eleanor is survived by her devoted daughters: Diane (Kemp) Vitale and husband Frank of Belvidere, New Jersey; and Kathleen Kemp and husband Gary Rosenfeld of Ruskin, Florida. She also leaves behind two cherished grandsons, Calvin Inscho and Mitchell Inscho; as well as two great-grandsons who brought her immense joy—Mason and Austin Inscho. She also is survived by numerous nephews, nieces, grandnephews and grandnieces.
A proud member of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church, Eleanor embraced her Ukrainian, Polish, and Russian heritage with pride. Her faith was a quiet but steady presence throughout her life.
Crocheting was Eleanor's lifelong passion. With nimble fingers and a generous heart, she created countless blankets, hats, and scarves—gifts she gave freely to anyone she considered a friend. Her creations were more than just yarn; they were expressions of love stitched with care and warmth.
Eleanor had a deep affection for animals—both domestic pets and wildlife alike. Known to feed any creature that crossed her path, she extended kindness not only to people but to all living things. Her home was often a haven for strays who found comfort in her gentle presence.
True to her Jersey roots, Eleanor was known for her sharp wit and unfiltered honesty. A great jokester with an infectious laugh, she never hesitated to speak her mind—and those who knew her loved her all the more for it. Even into her nineties, she remained fiercely independent—driving herself until a fall left her shoulder broken in four places.
