Eleanor "Elly" Mary Smith passed away peacefully on January 11, 2026, while in the care of hospice, surrounded by love. She was 90 years old.
Elly was born on October 10, 1935, in Brockton, Massachusetts, to William and Ella McCarthy. She was the eldest sibling to her twin brother Richie and sister Elaine. A graduate of Brockton High School in June 1953.
After graduation, Elly worked as a telephone operator for Bell Telephone Company. In December 1956, she married Richard "Dick" Johnson. Together, they moved to California to raise their three sons: Kirk, Kevin, and Kerry. Her son Kerry sadly preceded her in death in 2004.
Elly worked at Central Bank and later with Contra Costa County Services, where she worked in appointment scheduling until her retirement in the early 2000s.
Elly had a deep love for her home and garden. She found joy in decorating her space, tending to her yard, and sharing laughter with her many friends and colleagues.
She is survived by her sons, Kirk and Kevin Johnson, and her beloved granddaughter, Kaitlyn Johnson.
Elly will be remembered with love by her family, friends, and all who had the privilege to know her.
The family extends heartfelt thanks to the hospice care team for their compassion and support.
