Elizabeth “Betty” Ann (Russell)(Wines) Leftwich had many accomplishments in her life, but she always said family was the most important. And she lived that; she always made time for her large extended family. She is the beloved daughter of the late James Bernard Russell and Mary Jane Beers; the sister of Mary Louise, James (wife Brenda); Gregory (wife Marcia); Mark (wife Patrice); Kevin; Paul; Denis (wife Janette); & Dan ; the mother of Hillary Flaherty (Wines) and Emily Tippett (Wines) (husband Michael); the grandmother of Michael, Damien and Avery; the aunt to many nieces and nephews, and a true friend to many who knew her.

A graduate of Holy Family Catholic School in Hillcrest Heights, Maryland and St. Patrick’s Academy Catholic High school in Washington, D.C., Betty found her calling as a Legal Administrative Assistant at Smith, Currie and Hancock LLP in Washington, D.C. Betty was no stranger to the trials of life. Throughout all, she was filled with grit and grace and was sustained by her great faith in God and the Lord Jesus Christ. She trusted the Lord to help her and bring her through these trials. She is preceded in death by her mother, father, sister Mary Louise, and brother’s Gregory and Paul.

Her biggest loves were her three grandchildren and singing. She grew up singing in the choir at Holy Family Catholic Church and was accompanied by her mother on the organ. She delighted in Saturday night karaoke with her daughters and best friend, Janet McDonald at Skipper’s Pier, Happy Harbor and Snug Harbor.

Many think that the measure of our lives is in the things that we do, or how many friends we have, or how smart we are, or how much money we have. We think the true measure of a life well lived is in how we have learned to love and Betty did that well.

A Visitation/Vigil will be held on Thursday, March 5, 2026 at Holy Family Catholic Church, 2210 Callaway St, Hillcrest Heights, MD at 10:30am. Funeral Mass 11:00am. Following the service the family will have a private interment service at Cedar Hill Cemetery, Suitland MD.
