ELIZABETH ("LIZ") MITCHELL DAY died in Birmingham, AL on Monday, October 20 at the age of 89. Liz was married for 62 years to her husband, Paul Phillip (Phil) Day who preceded her in death. Liz is survived by her loving family: her son, Jeffrey Paul Day (Mona) of Mason, OH; her daughter, Ann Day Hunt (David) of Birmingham, AL; five grandchildren: Lauren Padurean (Todd), Alex Day (Kayla), Will Hunt (Paola), Elizabeth Hunt, and Virginia Hunt; and two great grandchildren, Ryland and Claire Padurean.

Liz was born in Grosse Pointe, Michigan on January 7, 1936, the only child of her parents, Hubbard and Elizabeth Mitchell. She loved growing up and attending schools in Grosse Pointe, and was thrilled to attend the College of William & Mary for her undergraduate degree where she became a lifelong member of Kappa Kappa Gamma sorority. She later earned a master's degree in education administration in West Virginia. Liz was a lifelong educator and absolutely adored her students while teaching, and her teachers while serving as an administrator. High points were her years as a teacher and then head of school of Wheeling Country Day School in Wheeling, WV where she and Phil raised their family; and after a move to Atlanta in the early 1980's, for her roles as administrator at Woodward Academy's Middle School and Lower School, as well as Associate Headmistress of Studies at Woodward North. She retired in 2007, and moved with Phil to the Keowee Key community in South Carolina where she enjoyed singing in the Key Koraliers, and staying connected to her KKG friends. In 2018, Liz and Phil moved to Birmingham, AL to be closer to family due to Phil's illness. Liz quickly made friends in her caregiver support group at Canterbury UMC, through PEO, with her bridge buddies at St. Luke's and with her kind neighbors at Fair Haven.

Liz will be remembered for her warmth; her generous spirit; her many friendships; her outstanding leadership as an educator; her obsessions with diet coke, desserts, green ballpoint pens, and all things RED....but most of all, for the love she showered on her family.

A memorial service will be held at the Chapel at Canterbury United Methodist Church on Monday, November 3 at 11am. In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts can be made to the Fountain of Love (1520 Copper Hill Rd, Irondale, AL 35210), or one of Liz's schools: Wheeling Country Day School (Wheeling, WV) or Woodward North Academy (Atlanta, GA),
