Betsy was a cherished wife, mother, sister, teacher and friend whose warmth, grace, and quiet strength touched every life she entered. She passed away peacefully on February 9, 2026, in Cypress, Texas, at the age of 85. Born Elizabeth Ann Mortlock in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, she spent much of her childhood in the vibrant city, Maracaibo, Venezuela. Those formative years immersed in new cultures, languages, and experiences nurtured in her adaptability, open-hearted spirit, and a love of travel that defined her throughout her life.
Betsy served as an elementary school teacher with the Houston Independent School District (HISD) for 38 years. She had a great love of books, but more than that, she loved teaching children to read. With patience and creativity, she opened doors to worlds of imagination and knowledge for her children, grandchildren, and countless young students. Her dedication went far beyond the curriculum. She was a nurturing guide who made every child feel capable and valued, leaving an indelible mark on generations.
Her greatest treasure was her family. She shared a loving marriage with her husband, Gale Regier, of Cypress Texas, whose companionship brought her happiness and steadfast support over many years. Betsy is also survived by her three beloved children: Scott Eric Fowler, Susan Paige Jannu and Jill Elizabeth Rudolph, two sisters, Judy Patrusky and Susan Benedetto, six grandchildren, and two great grandchildren. She was the gentle, unwavering heart of her family - a mother whose unconditional love, wise counsel and quiet wisdom provided comfort and strength to all. Her children and their families carry forward the profound love and values she instilled so deeply.
Betsy will be forever remembered for the lives she shaped as an educator, the cultural richness she embraced from her early years abroad, her abiding love of reading and sharing it with children, and the enduring devotion she gave to her family. She leaves behind a legacy of kindness, resilience, and heartfelt connection that will live on in every story read, every lesson learned, and every heart she touched.
A celebration of Betsy's life will be held at Lakewood Methodist Church, 11330 Louetta Rd, Houston, Texas on Monday, March 2nd at 11:00 AM. Any expression of sympathy, including flowers or donations to The
American Cancer Society, are welcome.
