Mrs. Elizabeth Berneice "Liz" Michael (née Harmon), age 85, passed away on January 23, 2025, in League City, Texas. Born on August 7, 1939, in Owosso, Michigan, Liz lived a vibrant and full life marked by adventure, friendship, and a deep love for her family.
The daughter of Ranous Duvol Harmon and Harriott (Aiken) Harmon, Liz grew up in Owosso and graduated from Owosso High School in 1957. She pursued higher education with determination and excellence, earning a Bachelor's degree in Communications from Central Michigan University in 1961. Her academic journey continued with a Master's degree in Public Administration from Western Michigan University in 1977.
Liz's professional career was as dynamic as her personality. In the 1970s, while living in Lansing, Michigan, she worked for the Michigan Supreme Court as a district judges administrator—a role that reflected her intelligence and organizational skill. Later in life, she brought her energy and flair to the hospitality world by running the kitchen at Maribelle's Bar in Seabrook, Texas alongside her second husband, Sal Cortello.
Throughout her life, Liz was known for her outgoing spirit and wide circle of friends that spanned across the United States and beyond. From childhood companions in Owosso to lifelong friendships nurtured in Beulah, Michigan—her beloved summer retreat on Crystal Lake—Liz was a devoted friend who made lasting impressions wherever she went. Her generosity was legendary; she had a gift for making people feel welcome and included. Holidays were often spent surrounded by friends she had invited into her home—especially those who might otherwise be alone.
An avid traveler with an eye for planning unforgettable getaways well over a year in advance, Liz found joy both in the serene woods of northwest Michigan and the turquoise waters of Cozumel, Mexico. These destinations became annual traditions that brought together family and friends for laughter-filled vacations. It was during one of her favorite pastimes—attending social events with her singles group in Port Isabel, Texas—that she met Robert "Mush" Michael. The two shared a deep bond and were married in Cozumel in 2009. Robert remained the love of her life until his passing.
Liz is survived by her son, David Brotherton; daughter, Meredith Welsh; and cherished granddaughter, Chelsea Brotherton. Her family was central to her life's joy—from spirited card games to lively rounds of Trivial Pursuit that filled their gatherings with laughter.
Opinionated and outspoken yet warm-hearted and inclusive, Liz lived life on her own terms—with passion, humor, and an open door to all. Whether hosting holiday dinners or organizing group trips to paradise islands or peaceful lakeshores, she created memories that will live on through those who knew and loved her.
May her memory bring comfort to all whose lives she touched.
