Elizabeth Ann Shugg

1946 - 2026

Elizabeth “Betty” Ann Shugg passed away on April 10, 2026 at Cooperman Barnabas Medical Center after a brief illness. She split her time between Key Largo, FL and Cedar Knolls, NJ after spending most of her adult life in Forest Lakes in Byram, NJ, where she raised her family.

Born in the Bronx, NY on December 31, 1946, Betty was the daughter of the late Catherine and Edward Keane. She is survived by her beloved husband of 57 years, Robert “Bob” Shugg. In addition to Bob, she leaves behind her daughters Christine Nichols and her husband Dave of Harding Township, NJ, Suzanne Shugg and her husband Mike Conde of New Providence, NJ, and Tricia Powers and her husband J.P. of Hingham, MA.

She was the devoted grandmother of Christopher, Peyton, Sammy, and Eliza, and step-grandmother of Elle and Julia, and their daughters, Lorelai and Alexandra.

Betty is also survived by her four brothers Edward Keane and his wife Shannon of FL, Michael Keane and his wife Teressa of NY, James Keane and his wife Donna of IN, and Vincent Keane and his wife Kathy of NJ and Cape Cod. She also leaves behind many cherished nieces and nephews.

Betty graduated from St. Catherine’s High School in the Bronx and went on to earn her nursing degree from Misericordia Nursing School in the Bronx, where she received her R.N. She began her career at Fordham Hospital in New York and later worked at Blue Cross Blue Shield for over 25 years before retiring.

Betty and Bob often described their 57 years of marriage as a great adventure. Their journey began with required military postings in the early years, followed by the joyful years of raising their three daughters in the beloved Forest Lakes community, where they built a life rich in friendship and family traditions. In retirement, they embraced the marine world of the Florida Keys, spending many afternoons on Bob’s boat and enjoying life on the water. Along the way they met many extraordinary people, many of whom became lifelong friends.

Betty will be remembered for her warmth, kindness, and the joy she brought to those around her. Even while spending winters a thousand miles away, she remained the rock of her family, never missing a birthday or wedding anniversary for her daughters and grandchildren. Whenever she returned to NJ, she could often be found cheering at soccer and lacrosse games or attending regattas in proud support of her grandchildren.

Betty had a remarkable gift for creating lasting friendships and meaningful traditions, and her love for her family was constant and unwavering. She leaves behind a family and circle of friends who will forever carry her warmth, laughter, and spirit with them. In memory of her beautiful life, a celebration will be held at a later date for family and friends.

In lieu of flowers, donations in Elizabeth’s memory may be made to the Vietnam Veterans of America at VVA.org, a cause that held special meaning for her.
