They will be like a tree planted by the water that sends out its roots by the stream.
It does not fear when heat comes; its leaves are always green.
It has no worries in a year of drought and never fails to bear fruit.
(Jeremiah 17:8)
As the final golden leaves fell and the air sharpened in preparation for the long winter's rest, Enid Elaine Knight entered her eternal rest on December 1, 2025 after a brief illness. She passed away peacefully in her home in Charlotte, NC just days after fulfilling her fondest wish of having her family join her once again for Thanksgiving.
Mrs. Knight "bloomed wherever she was planted" with grace and good humor. Born and educated in Ariton, Alabama, she moved to Troy, Alabama to work as a Southern Bell operator. She married James Knight in 1958 and soon began her career as an Army wife and mother. Entrusted with creating a series of homes for the family throughout Georgia, Alabama, North Carolina and even Germany for one, then two, then three children, Mrs. Knight thrived through every season. Mrs. Knight joyfully married her second husband, Kenneth "Max" Knight in 1974, and they settled with her children in Charlotte. She revered education and made sure that each of her children had the opportunity and support to continue their schooling beyond high school. Mrs. Knight became the "hostess with the mostess" at a former Coulwood/Oakdale staple, The Harbour House, where she charmed customers and co-workers alike. In each of her varied homes and communities, Mrs. Knight's creative soul blossomed through her extensive flower and vegetable gardens as well as her brilliant talent as a seamstress. She created entire wardrobes for herself and her children-and some of her most beautiful work was sewn for her granddaughter. Always elegant and composed, she lived on her own terms with dignity and gratitude and departed this life in the same way. Her final words to her grandchildren were "I love my family".
Mrs. Knight was preceded in death by both her husbands, parents Melvin and Vonnie Danner, a sister, Glenda Spivey, a brother, David Danner and a son-in-law Lester Plemmons.
She is survived by her sisters Barbara Danner and Edna Senn of Alabama, daughter Lyn Plemmons of Denver, NC, son James "Rick" Knight of Charlotte, NC daughter Angela "Susie" Kalkhoran (Nader) of Tewksbury, MA, grandchildren Mitchell (Stephanie) Plemmons of Hickory, NC, Leyla Kalkhoran (Ambrose Orr) of Wilder VT, and Ameen Kalkhoran of Tewksbury, MA. She is also survived by two great-grandchildren, Genevieve and Penny Plemmons of Hickory.
In accordance with her wishes, her earthly remains will be interred in her home church cemetery at Center Ridge Baptist Church during azalea season in the spring of 2026. In lieu of flowers, please plant something that you can enjoy as a remembrance of her vibrant life. Donations may be made to Center Ridge Baptist Church, 3573 N Highway 123, Ariton, Ala 36311.
