Erika Knafl, 85, of Downers Grove, passed away on March 27, 2026. Terry, the love of her life and husband of over 50 years, was by her side. Together, they made lifelong friends, traveled the world, built businesses, raised three daughters, and shared a lifetime of laughter.
Erika was born in Kappeln, Germany on May 4, 1940, and spent much of her youth in Denmark. Among her many accomplishments, Erika represented Denmark in the 1956 Olympics in Melbourne, Australia as a sprinter. After moving to the United States, she obtained her pilots' license, started a building business and constructed over 1,000 homes across the western suburbs of Chicago. In 2000, Erika became a founding owner of Just For Kicks soccer facility and remained so for the rest of her life.
Erika's greatest pride and joy was her family. In addition to her husband, Terry, she is survived by her three daughters, Bettina (Don) Siebert, Annette Stammnitz (former husband, Dirk Stammnitz), Renee O'Flynn (Harold L'Hote). She will be greatly missed by her grandchildren, Nikki (Joe) Camp, Brie (Andrew) Javorka, Mitchell (Alyssa) O'Flynn, Madison O'Flynn (fiancé Justin Barden), Erik Stammnitz and Lauren Stammnitz. Last year, she became Great Grandma Erika to Liam O'Flynn and Jonah Javorka. She was joyfully awaiting the arrival of her first great granddaughter, baby Georgie Camp.
Erika will be remembered as incredibly determined, hardworking, and loving. She faced hardships with grace. Her adventurous spirit, affinity for life, and competitive nature inspired those around her. She had a rich and fulfilling life. As her sweet grandchild said, "She squeezed the juice out of life".
A celebration of life will be held on May 3, 2026 at 872 Okolona Court, Naperville, IL from 1-5pm. Please join us at your convenience for the open house, and dress in your best and brightest colors in memory of Erika.
In lieu of flowers, please make a donation to your favorite charity.
