Ermelinda "Linda" Espinola Sweatt, 78, originally of Plainfield, Connecticut, died at home in Gray, Maine on December 18, 2025.
She was born in Plainfield in 1947 to Eddie and Mary Espinola, both veterans of World War II. Linda held dear memories of her childhood with her younger sister, Charlene, surrounded by their proud Azorean extended family.
Linda attended Plainfield High School before studying Mathematics and Education at Nasson College in Maine. After earning her Master's degree in Mathematics from the University of Connecticut, she taught for more than thirty years at Plainfield High School. She advised numerous student organizations, including Student Council and the National Honor Society, started the PHS Panthers Concession Stand, chaperoned international trips and coached field hockey. Teaching was a calling she carried with pride throughout her life. She always remembered her students fondly.
While studying at Nasson, Linda met her future husband of 54 years, Ron Sweatt. They married in 1971, excited to begin their lives together. Over the years, they traveled extensively, visiting 46 of the 50 states, pursued advanced degrees, built their careers, and raised their family. Linda's children, Tanya and Jason, meant the world to her. She gave countless hours supporting their sports teams, troops, chorus and band activities.
Linda spent her summers on Bustins Island, where her involvement in the island community ran long and deep. She was active with CABI, the Adult and Children's Library, served as Secretary for the Board of Overseers, assisted with Post Office duties, and supported the family business, Bustins Builders.
One of Linda's greatest joys was being a grandmother to Finley and Wheeler. She treasured her time with them. Her love, patience and warmth shone brightest when she was with her grandchildren.
Linda was a beloved wife, mother, grandmother, sister, educator, and Bustins Islander — a no-nonsense, plain-spoken force of nature. She enriched the lives of all who were fortunate to know her, and her memory will live on in the hearts of those who loved her.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Edmund and Mary (Sylvia) Espinola, and her godmother, Hermina (Pacheco) Simmons. She is survived by her loving husband, Ronald Sweatt; her children, Tanya Sweatt and spouse Laura, and Jason Sweatt and spouse Dara; her grandchildren, Finley and Wheeler; her sister, Charlene Espinola; and several nieces and nephews.
A celebration of her life will be held in Maine at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the American Diabetes Association or the American Cancer Society.
