It is with a heavy heart that I share the passing of Ernest Charles Cono. Known as "Ernie" to his friends and family, he passed peacefully at the age of 79.
He was preceded in death by his father, Joseph Gary Cono, and his mother, Rosemary Brown Cono. Joseph immigrated to the United States from Messina, Sicily in 1940, where he met and married Rosemary in her hometown of Baltimore, Maryland shortly thereafter. It was in Takoma Park, Maryland where they welcomed their two sons, Ernie and Gary. Soon after Ernie was born, the family ventured west to Southern California, where they made their permanent home.
Ernie is survived by his daughter, Jacqueline Kristin Cono-Clippinger, and his two grandchildren, Zoe and Kace. They shared countless occasions together, creating lifelong memories that will forever be treasured.
After a brief stint in the U.S. Army, Ernie explored a variety of career paths, favoring auto tech and computer programming, but ultimately finding his true passion in real estate. He built a thriving company that continues today under the direction of his daughter. His charismatic personality and unwavering integrity earned him great success and a reputation as a well-respected broker in San Diego, in addition to the lifelong friendship of many.
An avid reader and true autodidact, he was endlessly curious about the world. There was nothing he couldn't fix, no conversation he couldn't enrich with insight (or humor), and no subject about which he lacked an opinion.
He was an accomplished boatsman from an early age and loved spending days at a time on the water, fishing off the California coast. When he retired his boat, he took up off-roading in California's Imperial Sand Dunes, where he spent many extended weekends driving his dune buggy at his favorite spot, Gordon's Well, alongside his daughter and his cherished desert group.
He loved to travel and visited destinations across the globe, from the pyramids of Mexico to the temples of Thailand. I will always remember our trip to his hometown in Maryland and D.C., adventures in Hawaii, and countless trips to the desert.
Happy travels, Dad.
