Eugene "Gene" Coval, 95, of Cementon, Pennsylvania, passed away peacefully on March 28, leaving behind a life as full of music, devotion, and purpose as it was of love.
Born on November 8, 1930, in Hokendauqua to Stephen Coval and Mary (Lukachovsky) Coval, Gene's life was rooted in family, faith, and community from the very beginning. He carried those values with him through every chapter of his remarkable 95 years.
A veteran of the Korean War, Gene trained with the 8th Infantry, attained the rank of Corporal, and went on to become a proud member of the United States Army Band—an early expression of a lifelong passion that would shape not only his career, but also the lives of so many around him.
Gene graduated from Whitehall High School, Class of 1948, and went on to earn his bachelor's and master's degrees in education from Kutztown University, with postgraduate studies at Lehigh University. While family always came first, Gene became known across the Lehigh Valley as a beloved lifelong educator and gifted musician. For 40 years, he taught in the Whitehall School District, inspiring generations of students. He often said he never worked a day in his life; teaching was his calling, brought to life through storytelling, curiosity, and the exhilarating "aha" moments when a student's eyes lit up with understanding.
A talented saxophonist and clarinetist, Gene performed in many of the area's dance bands and recorded two albums with The Ambassadors. His love of music extended far beyond performance; through his work at Walter's Music Studio, he influenced countless young musicians, instilling in them not only skill, but also discipline, passion, and confidence.
At home, Gene's greatest joy was his family. He shared 67 beautiful years of marriage with his loving wife, Janice (Crissman) Coval—his partner in every sense, whom he loved and admired deeply for her intelligence, generosity, and grace. As a father and grandfather ("Dide"), Gene led by example. He showed his children and grandchildren what it meant to work hard, stay active, and embrace life with curiosity and creativity. He filled their world with music and athletics, encouraged them to pursue excellence, and stood beside them every step of the way.
He was, above all, the number one fan of his five grandchildren, all competing in different sports at the collegiate level. Gene and Janice rarely missed a game, a meet, a match, or a milestone. Whether on a high school field or a college court, they were there, cheering them on with unwavering pride.
A deeply spiritual man, Gene was a member and lector at Holy Trinity Church, where his faith found expression in both word and action. He was also a longtime member of the Hokey American Legion, Jones-Quigg Post 739.
He is survived by his devoted wife, Janice; his children, Scott Coval (Kaye) of Orefield, PA, and Amy Coval Wurth (Mark) of Boca Raton, FL; and his cherished grandchildren: Ella Wurth Schneider (John) of Chicago, IL; Sam Wurth of Huntington Beach, CA; Keeley Coval of New York, NY; Mia Coval of Philadelphia, PA; and Nick Coval of Orefield, PA.
He was preceded in death by his beloved son, Tim Coval; his parents, Stephen and Mary Coval; and his brother, Daniel Coval.
Gene's legacy lives not only in the lessons he taught or the music he played, but in the lives he shaped, the family he cherished, and the example he set. His was a life well lived—one of dedication, kindness, faith, and joy—and his presence will be deeply missed and forever remembered.
His Memorial Service officiated by Rev. Msgr. Daniel J. Yenushosky will be on Saturday April 18, 2026 at Noon in Holy Trinity Roman Catholic Church 4456 Main Street, Whitehall, Pennsylvania 18052, where family will receive guests beginning at 10:30 am.
