Eugene Charles Hamilton, 68, passed away surrounded by family and love.
He spent most of his life in Oregon's Willamette Valley, a place that fit who he was and how he lived.
Gene retired as a Salem Police Sergeant after a career dedicated to service, integrity, and protecting others. Law enforcement was not just a job for him. It was part of his identity and something he carried with pride. He was a longtime member of the VFW and the police officers' union, standing shoulder to shoulder with those who shared the same calling.
Above all else, Gene was a father, grandfather, and great-grandfather. He was also a son, a brother, and a friend. He loved deeply and lived larger than life, choosing to live on his own
terms and without apology. Those who knew him understood that his presence filled a room, whether through his stories, his laughter, or simply the way he showed up for people.
Gene was an avid outdoorsman who found peace and purpose in the woods and on the water. Hunting big game and fishing were more than hobbies. They were part of who he was
and where he felt most at home.
He is survived by his wife, Christine Hamilton, his children, Brandon (Heather) Hamilton, Dustin (Danielle) Hamilton, Robin (Chris) Fournier, McKenzie (Keith) Swider, and Step
Children Nathan (Erin) Hughet, Amber (John) Marx, Amanda (Ryan) Kellmer along with grandchildren Devone, Josie, Ethan, Reed, Riley, KJ, Nakeiyah, Logan, Abby, Jake, Myles, Camden, Ollie, Maverick, Flynn, Sloan, Emmet, Link, JayTyler, Dustin, Cody, Trevor, Jessie
and great-grandson Mason.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Alice and Charles Hamilton, his brother Jim Sondergaard, and sisters Sandy Soderberg and Mary Kay Encinas.
Gene gave his life to Jesus Christ, our Lord and Savior, and is now at home, free from pain. He will be deeply missed by his family and friends, but we find comfort in knowing he is resting peacefully in the presence of our Lord.
Gene will be remembered for the way he loved, the life he chose to live, and the impact he left on those fortunate enough to know him.
A celebration of life will be held at the Scotts Mills Grange, Located at 299 4th Street Scotts Mills OR 97375 on January 31, 2026, at 11:00am.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to the Salem Police Officer's Association.
