Eunice August Hawran, born June 1, 1926, in Stamford, Connecticut, passed away peacefully on February 9, 2026, in Mountain View, California, at the age of 99.
Eunice grew up in Stamford with her siblings and cousins, developing a lifelong love of dance. She was especially fond of performing the male role in the lively Prisiadki dance while her cousin Millie danced beside her. As a young woman, she often traveled to Manhattan for dances and volunteered at her local theater, nurturing a deep appreciation for music, performance and community. In the early 80s, Eunice wrote a book called “Let’s Be Loverly All Over” under the pen name Eunice Augustine.
After graduating from secretarial school, Eunice learned to read blueprints during the war and began a long and varied career in office and financial work. She worked as an accountant and bookkeeper for organizations, including UC Redlands and Marketeer, where she was part of the accounting pool and also modeled for advertisements featuring the first golf cart. She later worked for a private accountant for eight years before changing paths in 1976 to become a residential realtor.
At age 65, Eunice launched a third career as a reservations agent with Amtrak. She was known for her strong work ethic, friendly manner and attention to detail. She helped train new agents in the then-new reservations office in Corona, California. She ultimately retired at age 75 as their top sales agent.
Eunice’s life was filled with friendships, family gatherings and simple joys. She enjoyed dancing, square dancing, bowling and hosting parties with her Parents Without Partners community. In her later years in Southern California and then at Villa Siena Senior Living Community in Mountain View, she became an avid bingo player, joining games three times a week. Visitors to her apartment were always greeted with kindness, a smile and a piece of candy, which she cheerfully called “energy.”
A faithful Christian of the Russian Orthodox faith, Eunice was a lifelong member of St. Mary’s Holy Assumption Russian Orthodox Church in Stamford, and later a devoted member of St. Herman-Alaska Orthodox Church in Sunnyvale, California, where she formed a close bond with Archpriest Martin Person.
Eunice is survived by her children, Michael John Hawran (75), Greggory John Hawran (72), and Melanie Eunice Yunk (63); grandchildren Jeremy Hawran (38) (Cara), and Chad Hawran (33); and great-grandchildren Carson (7) and Issa (2). She was preceded in death by her parents, Theodore “Frank” Bodick, Mildred “Millie” Zalewski, her devoted stepfather Vincent Zalewski and her brothers John and Peter Bodick.
Eunice loved everyone she met and often reminded others to smile, believing it could make any moment brighter. In her later years, when asked how she was doing, she would grin and say, “I’m still here!” One of her favorite sayings was a quote by Lucille Ball: “The secret of staying young is to live honestly, eat slowly and lie about your age.”
A memorial service will be held at a later date at Villa Siena Senior Living Community in Mountain View, California. She will be buried at the Woodland Cemetery in Stamford, Connecticut. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the Villa Siena Foundation at https://villa-siena.org/support.
