Evelyn Holmes was born on March 19, 1954, to Lester and Mamie Holmes. As the second youngest of twelve siblings, she was raised in a loving environment and was fiercely protective of her family.
Evelyn valued education highly. She earned an associate’s degree and encouraged her children and grandchildren to pursue higher education as well. There was nothing she loved more than celebrating graduations with her family.
After retiring from the United States Postal Service in 1991, Evelyn began her second career in real estate. She purchased her first multi-family property and took on plumbing, electrical, and carpentry projects herself. Fashionable and skilled, her designer purses often contained both cosmetics and pipe wrenches.
Evelyn was a wonderful person. She was loving, supportive, and selfless. She opened her home to many nieces and nephews and guided them to reach their full potential. Everyone knew that Aunty Evelyn could be trusted to be honest and genuine and always had their best interests at heart.
Evelyn departed this world on January 5, 2026. She was preceded in death by her parents, Lester and Mamie Holmes; her sisters, Eleanor, Jewel, Benita, Brenda, and Beverly; her brothers, Lawrence, Odel, Herman, Willie, Leon, and Larry; her special nephew, Joseph “Buster” McCree III; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and many other beloved relatives and friends.
She leaves behind cherished memories for her children: Tracy Prowell (Anthony), Dr. Robert Cook, Jr. (Meghan); her grandchildren: Atiya Hall and Kaitlyn Cook; one sister, Ada Landry (Maurice); and a multitude of nieces, nephews, relatives, and friends who loved her.
