Evelyn Coleman Lester, age 97 of Marietta Georgia passed away on November 10, 2025 at home surrounded by her family.
Evelyn was born in Charleston, West Virginia on September 12, 1928 to Chester and Gladys Coleman. She was married to William "Bill" V. Lester, Jr., her high school sweetheart September 1, 1940 for nearly 75 years and they had two children, Cynthia Samuels and Gary Lester, two grandsons and five great-grandchildren. They moved from South Charleston West Virginia to Dunwoody, Georgia in the early 1980s to be close to her grandchildren.
Evelyn had a long career of volunteering at the churches she was a member. She and Bill were deeply involved at Brookhaven Christian Church where she served as a Deaconess during their many happy years there. She hosted a High Tea luncheon for several years which benefitted the local children's day care. Evelyn became a member of Johnson Ferry Baptist Church in 2021 where she became very involved in the Encore Sunday School Class.
In her early years Evelyn was a key organizer in the implementation of the United Auto Workers into a plant in South Charleston, West Virginia as well as an assistant to the owner of Mountain Trucking where she was responsible for key administrative functions including payroll and expenses. When she was not volunteering or working, she enjoyed crafting, knitting, crocheting and babysitting for her grandchildren and later on her great-grandchildren.
Evelyn is survived by her daughter Cynthia M. Samuels and her son Gary W. Lester and wife Vikki Lester, grandsons Shawn William Samuels and his wife, Tanya Samuels and Robert Franklin Samuels and his wife Tara Samuels along with her great-grandchildren Holden William Samuels, Kendal Parr, Parker Joseph Samuels, Kaitlyn Brooke Samuels and Carter William Samuels.
Evelyn was preceded in death by her Mother Gladys Coleman Shaffer, Father Chester Coleman and brother Walt Coleman and her husband William V. Lester, Jr.
The internment will be held Friday, January 23rd @ 3:00pm. Evelyn's Celebration of Life will be held at Johnson Ferry Baptist Church in Marietta, Georgia on January 24, 2026. Visitation will be held in the Narthex at 1pm with service at 2pm.
