Gospel Singer Fannie Mae Evans, affectionately known as Fannie Porter, passed away on March 16, 1980, in Cincinnati, Ohio, at the age of 51. Born on November 12, 1928, in Cincinnati, she remained deeply rooted in her hometown throughout her life.
Fannie matriculated through the Cincinnati Public Schools system and later found employment with the University of Cincinnati. Her professional life was marked by dedication and service, but it was her spiritual calling and musical gift that defined her legacy.
Baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ, Fannie lived a life fervently committed to her faith. She was commissioned to evangelize through song, using what many described as a supernatural gift to minister healing, deliverance, and salvation. Her powerful renditions of gospel classics such as "Nothing Between" and "God Specializes" moved countless hearts and souls.
Fannie's voice became a beacon of hope across airwaves and television screens during the 1960s and 1970s. She gained renown as a solo gospel singer featured on WKRC TV Cincinnati with the No-El Gospel Singers. Her ministry expanded further when she joined the Grammy Award-winning Charles Fold and the Charles Fold Singers. Through radio broadcasts on WCIN 1480 AM with Bible Way Church of God in Christ—under the leadership of Rev. Abraham Isaac Jacob Swanson the 12th—Fannie's voice reached even more listeners. Her recordings continue to inspire today; performances such as "God's Not Dead" with Rev. James Cleveland and the Charles Fold Singers and "Jesus" with the No-El Gospel Singers remain accessible via YouTube.
Beyond her musical ministry, Fannie was known for her extraordinary generosity and compassion. A tremendous cook, she often opened her home to individuals in need of food, shelter, or clothing. Many who entered her home during difficult times left not only nourished but transformed—becoming part of an extended family forged through love and care.
Fannie's legacy lives on through her children: Carolyn Davis Andrews, Sherwood "Glenn" Davis, Berlinda J Porter, and Sandra E Brooks; as well as her grandchildren: Dwight, Da'Mon, and Deltrescia Davis. She was preceded in death by her firstborn son Dwight Davis, who passed away several days after birth.
May Fannie Mae Evans' enduring spirit continue to uplift all who were touched by her voice and kindness. Her memory remains a blessing to those who knew her and a testament to a life lived in faithful service.
