1931 - 2025

Farrel Loy Schell, aged 93, passed away on October 5, 2025, in Oakland, CA. Born on December 14, 1931, Farrel dedicated his life to his family, his career, and his numerous passions.
Farrel was a beloved husband to Shirley Samuelson Schell for 70 years, who preceded him in death. He is survived by his son James Schell; daughter Maria Peter; and granddaughter Amanda Peter. Farrel was also preceded in death by his parents, Lillian and Thomas Schell, and his brother, William (Bill) Schell.
Educated at the University of Kansas, where he earned a degree in Architectural Engineering, Farrel went on to a distinguished career. He achieved a professional degree in Urban Transportation from Carnegie-Mellon University and worked on significant projects such as the Titan Missile Launcher Installation, and the Bay Area Rapid Transit System, where he designed the BART cars. His efforts earned him a Mayoral Award of Merit from Diane Feinstein for his role as Project Director of the Muni Metro Task Force. Farrel's career spanned various leadership roles, including managing the Kaiser Engineers' Urban Transportation Department and overseeing major transportation projects across the United States and in Taiwan.
Farrel served as a Lieutenant in the United States Navy for three years, where he honed his leadership and technical skills that would later benefit his civilian career.
He and his wife Shirley shared a deep love of the arts, attending symphony, ballet, and theater performances. An avid sports fan, Farrel supported the Oakland A's, UC Berkeley Golden Bears football, and Golden State Warriors basketball teams. His artistic talents were not confined to his professional life; a gifted artist and calligrapher, Farrel was rarely without a pen or brush in hand. His artistic spirit also found expression in “The Christmas Times Newsletter,” a cherished family tradition that showcased his humor and warmth. Farrel was an avid fly fisherman who tied his own flies and ventured into mountain wilderness on horseback to reach remote fishing spots.
Farrel was a pillar of his community, actively involved in St. Paul's Towers' Green Action and Financial Studies Committees. His love for the environment is reflected in his family's request for contributions to be made to Save the Redwoods, 111 Sutter Street, San Francisco, CA 94104, or online at www.savetheredwoods.org.
He is remembered with love by his son James Schell; daughter Maria Peter; and granddaughter Amanda Peter. His life was marked by his commitment to his family, his humor, and his service to the community.
