Fern June Netzky (Grossman), 83, of Skokie, IL, died December 24, 2025.
Fern is remembered by her children, Brian (Leora) Netzky, Sheryl Netzky, Jonathan (Jennifer) Netzky; her grandchildren, Brenna Netzky, Maxwell Perlmuter, Naomi Netzky, Jack Perlmuter, Joseph Netzky, Grant Perlmuter, and Benjamin Netzky; and by her cousin Paula (Phil) Stone and their daughter Amalya Stone. Fern was preceded in death by her parents Irving and Sophie Grossman and her sister Valerie Nathan. Fern loved nurturing and showing up for her family, making gazpacho and spinach dip for backyard pool parties for friends, watching football, baseball, and tennis, seeing broadway shows, shopping for the latest fashion trends, and eating Lou Malnati's pizza, in that order. She stored brownies sprinkled with powdered sugar and chocolate covered toffee squares-that had no toffee in them- and chicken soup with vegetable pulp, in her freezer at all times for her loved ones. She carried Hot Wheels in her pockets for her grandkids' delight and despite having MS for around fifty years, she and her electric wheelchair, even drove across state lines to family weddings and bar mitzvahs, as well as to attend every possible local cheerleading or sports game of her grandchildren's. She had a fierce sense of humor, never threw a game of backgammon, Old Maid or Uno to anyone, including a two year old, and did not tolerate cheaters. In the 60's, she taught children in Chicago schools, until she birthed her own. She was ahead of the bike path curve, and in the 1970's successfully petitioned the township of Northbrook, Illinois to install sidewalks. so families could ride from neighborhoods into town. She and her cousin Paula Stone made history traveling home from visiting Jonathan in the Netherlands, on September 11th, in one of the planes that was diverted to St. John, Newfoundland, and had a similar experience to what was depicted in the musical Come From Away. She sent not only birthday cards, but also Halloween, and Valentine's cards to all her loved ones. She did her best to make what was important to those she loved, important to her, and modeled how to persevere past obstacles beyond measure, while maintaining a sharp mind, a titanium will, and the fire of love in her heart. Services were held at Shalom Memorial Park, 1700 W. Rand Road, Arlington Heights, IL.
