Francis Albert "Sonny" Bignault, Jr., 89, passed away peacefully on December 2, 2025, in Midway, Georgia. A devoted husband, father, uncle and friend to many, Sonny lived a full and vibrant life rooted in family, faith, and craftsmanship.
Born on April 28, 1936, in Savannah, Georgia, Sonny was the son of Francis Albert Bignault, Sr. and Winona Barron Bignault. He graduated from Savannah High School and went on to attend Armstrong College, where he studied architectural drafting—laying the foundation for a lifelong career in design and construction.
In 1959, Sonny joined the Georgia Air National Guard at Travis Field. His service was followed by work with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and later with Merrill Levy ARCHT. In the early 1970s, he founded Bignault Construction, where he combined his talents as an architectural designer and home builder to create lasting structures throughout his community.
Sonny was a longtime resident of Priester Estates in Shellman Bluff, Georgia—a place that became not just his home but a reflection of his love for nature and coastal living. An avid hunter and fisherman, he found joy in the outdoors and shared that passion with those around him. Sonny received an Ironmans award for 50 plus consecutive years of hunting Black Beard island. He also loved dancing and brought energy and rhythm to every gathering.
A man of faith, Sonny was a dedicated member of Shellman Bluff Baptist Church in Townsend, Georgia. He sang in the church choir and found great comfort and purpose through worship and fellowship.
He is survived by his beloved wife, Debby Bignault; his daughter, Amber Bignault; and those who considered him a father figure: Bud Halford, Bradley Halford, Deidre Daughtry, Johnny Ann Morris, Robert Coleman, Charles Doug Coleman, Gayle Coleman, Scott Biezenbos and many grandchildren, nieces and nephews.
Sonny was preceded in death by his parents; his brother Howard E. Bignault; his sister Jeanne B. Shurling; and his brother-in-law George "Dewey" Shurling.
Francis A. "Sonny" Bignault's legacy lives on through the homes he built, the lives he touched and the songs he sang in praise. May his memory bring comfort to all who knew him.
