Frederick Daniel Keenan

1951 - 2025

Frederick Daniel Keenan Jr.died on December 29, 2025 at his home in the Northern Liberties section of Philadelphia, PA. He was 74 years old.

Fred was born on July 27, 1951 in Vineland, NJ, where he was raised and educated in the Public School System, prior to moving to Philadelphia. He was baptized at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Vineland, but later in life became deeply involved with St. Andrew Russian Orthodox Cathedral in Philadelphia. His connection to the Cathedral was rooted in family history. His mother Mary, along with several aunts and uncles, had been baptized there. His maternal grandfather was Russian, born in Minsk, which sparked Fred's enduring interest in the Russian language and culture and ultimately inspired a pilgrimage to his ancestral homeland.

As a young man, Fred embraced his artistic sensibilities, studying at the Philadelphia College of Art. He went on to build a diverse and accomplished professional career. At Strawbridge and Clothier he served as an advertising production manager where letters of recommendation noted that "his management and guidance were far more technologically advanced than any other competition." After Macy's acquired that company, Fred became a lace buyer for wedding gowns, traveling to Paris in search of fine materials. Later he worked as a customer service representative with the Internal Revenue Service.

Fred had a deep appreciation for nature, history, art, the British Royals, ice cream and the solace of quiet surroundings. His home reflected his refined taste, especially his own Victorian parlor where he felt most at ease. During his more active years he was an avid English Rider who enjoyed jumping, and found joy and elegance in equestrian life.

A devoted lover of animals, Fred began breeding and raising Yorkshire Terriers. His neighbors affectionately called him the "Mayor of Lawrence Street" and "the charming man, always walking his dogs, forever dignified and polite."

Fred is survived by many cousins who hold fond memories of his infectious smile and gracious demeanor. He was predeceased by his mother Mary, and his sister Carol Keenan. He also leaves behind many beloved Yorkies, most especially Winnie, Buntie, Archie, Gabbie, Sophie and Bowie. As a resident of his home for over 40 years he will be missed by many neighbors who enjoyed all that he was and shared.

A memorial service will be held at St. Michael the Archangel Russian Orthodox Church Hall, located at Fourth and Fairmount in Northern Liberties (enter from the west side parking lot), on February 21, 2025 at 11 AM. A memorial service and burial will take place in Vineland, NJ at a later date.
