Frederika Genavova "Fredie" Rivera, born August 15, 1948, in San Antonio, Texas, passed away peacefully on February 26, 2026, surrounded by the love of her family. She lived a life defined by intellectual curiosity, professional excellence, deep faith, devotion to family, and a joyful spirit that brought laughter to those around her.
Fredie was a lifelong scholar and accomplished nurse whose academic achievements reflected both brilliance and determination. She graduated as salutatorian of Fox Tech High School in San Antonio and later earned her nursing degree from San Antonio Community College, graduating valedictorian of her class.
Driven by a lifelong commitment to learning, Fredie fulfilled a personal dream later in life by returning to school in her mid-50s to pursue her Bachelor of Science degree at the University of Texas at San Antonio. Retaking demanding science and mathematics courses decades after first leaving school, she once again graduated valedictorian, a remarkable achievement that reflected her discipline, intellect, and perseverance.
Fredie spent the majority of her nursing career at Cape Cod Community Hospital, where she worked in the Cardiac Coronary Care Unit and frequently served as charge nurse. She was widely respected for her calm leadership, strong advocacy, and dedication to her profession. During this time she also served as Chapter President of the Massachusetts Nurses Association, guiding members through a challenging labor strike. Her steady leadership and commitment to fairness earned praise from both nurses and hospital administration for helping bring about a thoughtful and balanced resolution.
While Fredie was proud of her academic and professional accomplishments, nothing meant more to her than her family. She took tremendous pride in her role as mother to Stephanie and Steven; was proud of the lives her children built for themselves; and found her greatest joy in her role as grandmother. Her grandchildren—Max, Katie, Mae, Kennedy, Jonas, Avery, Bella, and Grace—were a constant source of happiness and laughter.
She loved being present for the important moments in their lives: school ceremonies, concerts, plays, parades, homecoming and prom photos. Summers on Cape Cod were especially meaningful to her, as she shared with her family the beaches, towns, and traditions she loved so much.
Fredie had a wonderful sense of humor. She was quick-witted and a little sarcastic, often raising an eyebrow and delivering a perfectly timed offbeat remark that would leave everyone laughing. And she could laugh—a full, joyful laugh that filled a room. She loved playing games, a great steak, and any chance to dance. If there was music playing, you could almost always get Fredie onto the dance floor.
Music was a lifelong love. Her children remember the small black radio in the bathroom and the many drives spent listening to music together—especially American Top 40 on Sunday afternoons after church. That love of music carried on through the generations and remains part of the family she cherished so deeply.
Her faith was an important part of her life. Frederika made sure her children had a strong foundation in their faith, regularly taking them to their home church, La Trinidad United Methodist Church in San Antonio, where many family memories were formed and where her life will be celebrated later this year.
Later in life, Fredie settled with her husband Peter in the Collegeville, Pennsylvania area, where she cherished being close to her grandchildren and actively involved in their lives.
Frederika was preceded in death by her beloved husband and the love of her life, Peter Torres, whom she devotedly cared for during his battle with Parkinson's disease. She is also preceded in death by her siblings Yolanda Silva and Williama Rivera.
She is survived by her children, Steven Mendoza and his wife Jennifer, and Stephanie McGowan (née Mendoza) and her husband Mathieu; her sisters Diana Baacke and Theresa Rivera; and her eight beloved grandchildren.
A Celebration of Life will be held in San Antonio, Texas, on August 15, 2026, which would have been Frederika's 78th birthday, at La Trinidad United Methodist Church, the church that meant so much to her and her family.
Fredie will be laid to rest at Cape Cod National Cemetery later this summer where she will be reunited with her beloved husband, Peter.
In lieu of flowers, the family kindly asks that donations be made in Frederika's memory to the American Diabetes Association or the Alzheimer's Association
