Gail Lynn Carlson

1948 - 2026

Gail Lynn Carlson, age 77, passed away peacefully on February 23, 2026, after complications from Alzheimer’s. Gail was born on April 9, 1948, in Windom, Minnesota, to Donald and Dorthea Glidden. Gail was the oldest of four; her siblings include Gregg (Audrey) Glidden, Kim (Per) Nielsen, and Kari Kalway. She grew up surrounded by a large extended family and spoke fondly of them until the end. Gail was preceded in death by both her parents and sister Kim.

Gail met John "Paul" Carlson in their hometown of Windom, and the two were married on May 3, 1970. Their 55-year marriage was grounded in commitment, shared values, and a deep sense of partnership that carried them through life’s joys and challenges. Together, Gail and Paul raised four children, each of whom carries forward her warmth and compassion: Nissa (Brian) Knutson, children Grace and Walker, Josh (Debi) Carlson, children Jesper and Oscar, Kai (Ashley) Carlson, child Camden, and Brett (Diana) Carlson, children Malaila, Halle, Adelynn, and Maisie.

Gail’s greatest joy was her family. She delighted in her children and grandchildren, celebrating their milestones, nurturing their interests, and helping them find their own voice. She believed that her children could do great things, was their biggest cheerleader, and showed her love through consistent encouragement.

Those who knew Gail will remember her laughter and sense of humor - bright, contagious, and often accompanied by a mischievous glint in her eye. She brought a little spice to every room she entered and carried a presence that made people feel at ease.

Gail’s professional life reflected her dedication to service and community. What began as volunteer work in her children’s schools grew into a meaningful career in education. She served as an administrative assistant in both Eden Prairie, MN and Johnston, IA public school districts. In Georgia, she continued her work in education as an executive administrative assistant at Kennesaw State University in the Ethics Department, retiring from that role in 2014. In every position, Gail brought organization and warmth that made colleagues feel supported and valued.

A lifelong lover of nature, Gail found peace among the trees, plants, birds, and pets who were always part of her home. She had a gentle way of noticing beauty—whether in a blooming flower, a migrating bird, wind in the trees, a rock, or a small moment of kindness. Gail’s legacy is one of compassion and connection. She will be deeply missed by her family, friends, and all who were fortunate enough to share in her life.

A celebration of life will be held at a future date. In lieu of flowers, donations to the Alzheimer’s Association in her name are appreciated.
