A life well lived…

Gail passed away peacefully in her home of forty years on December 23, 2025. She was a devoted daughter, wife, mother, grandmother and great grandmother, with a wide circle of friends and loved ones, and an unwavering faith in her Church. Gail is preceded in death by her husband Robert Funderlic and her son Michael Funderlic.

Born on October 30, 1937, in Chicago, Illinois to Catherine Chapman DeVriendt and Leslie C. DeVriendt, Gail was raised by a strong and devoted single mother that laid the foundation for Gail to lead a life of success from humble beginnings. This foundation was reinforced by her loving brothers Chuck DeVriendt and Don DeVriendt (passed).

Gail met her late husband, Bob Funderlic while working in downtown Chicago. Upon Bob’s graduation from the University of Notre Dame they married and moved south to Oak Ridge, Tennessee where they raised their family. While in Tennessee Bob received his doctoral degree from the University of Tennessee, which led to him to becoming Department Head of Computer Science at North Carolina State University, prompting a move to Cary, NC where Bob and Gail celebrated their 49th wedding anniversary prior to Bob’s passing in 2009. With a wide circle of friends in the area, Gail’s 80th birthday was celebrated with over 70 people in attendance.

Gail participated in multiple bridge groups, book clubs, and a bunco group that made annual trips to the NC coast. She entertained guests in her lovely home and spent a lot of her time with friends. Gail’s love for family prompted her deep interest in genealogy, amongst her many other hobbies. Gail was an avid sports fan and her blood ran deep orange as a Tennessee Vol. Gail and Bob were very active in the Catholic Ministry at NCSU through Aquinas House and Gail had a special bond with many priests over her decades there, especially Father Joe McNamara and Father Alex Gonzales. More recently, Father Joshua provided her with spiritual comfort through the last years of her life’s journey.

Gail was most proud of her children, grandchildren, great grandchildren, and many friends. As a sign of Gail’s loving and nurturing nature she became known as “Mama Gail” to Franki Lee, Ken Walsh and Ann Caputo (passed). Gail is survived by her daughter, Susan Fisher, Susan’s son Matt, his wife Stephanie and their children Zachary, Kaylee and Michael. Gail is also survived by granddaughter Catherine Ensworth, and great grandchildren William (Liam) and Elizabeth (Ella).

Gail spent Thanksgiving in the company of her grandkids, their spouses and her five great grand-kids. Shortly afterwards she entered home hospice and passed peacefully a month later. The family would like to express thanks to the many visitors to Gail’s home to see her in her last weeks and the overwhelming expression of sympathy and love for Gail since her passing.
