Spielman, Galen Raymond
Galen died peacefully at home on Monday, January 26, 2026, beloved husband of Janet James, loving father of Galen James (Melissa), Jesse
James (Travis), Heather (Jerry (deceased)), Damon, and Laurie, and five grandchildren. His brother Ronald pre-deceased him.
Galen was born October 12, 1937 in Larrimore ND. His family moved to Sioux Falls, SD where he spent his formative years.
Galen was an artist to the core of his being. He participated in theatrical productions in Sioux Falls: acting, designing sets and costumes, and directing. His hands were never idle whether it was painting, sculpting, or ceramics
He started in the early days of television in Sioux Falls, SD sweeping floors as a teenager. Television was exciting and he made it his career. His last two career stops were in Pittsburgh at WIIC-TV and finally KDKA-TV where he was a director/producer and operations manager. He loved it all. He traveled with the Steelers in their heyday of the 1970's, and the Penguins on their road trips. When he transferred to KDKA he directed news and specials, e.g., Ella Fitzgerald: Live at the Point, Pittsburgh Symphony, etc. In his final years of tv he produced and directed "Let's Read a Story" for children.
Galen was a veteran who served in the army. He was drafted and sent to Monterrey, CA to study Korean and then was shipped overseas and served in counter-intelligence.
He will be missed.
