Gary Hawks, Sr., passed away on January 11, 2026, in Dallas, Texas, at the age of 88. Born on December 6, 1937, in Detroit Michigan, Gary lived a life marked by dedication—to his family, his work, his country, and his community.
Gary grew up in Bergland Michigan, a small town on the north end of Lake Gogebic within the Ottawa National Forest. Gary shared fond memories of playing on Bergland High School’s “6-man” football team. for Bergland High School. There weren’t enough students to field an “eleven-man” roster.
Gary proudly served in the United States Army. Gary served in the same armored unit in Germany as Elvis Presly. Unfortunately, Elvis never enjoyed the pleasure of knowing Gary. Gary received an honorable discharge from the Army at the rank of Sergent in 1959.
In 1960, he met the love of his life, Carol, in Detroit, MI. While employed as a baker’s assistant, Gary married Carol and adopted her four children. Over the next eight years they would add two more children to the tribe.
Gary entered the apprentice program upon which he built a long and respected career as a millwright with General Motors. His strong work ethic and commitment to excellence left a lasting impression on those who worked alongside him. Gary retired from GM in 2001.

Gary also earned an associate in science degree from Mid-Michigan Community College. Earned while working full-time, raising six children, and his other volunteer commitments.

A man of deep faith, Gary was a devoted member of St. Anne's Catholic Church in Edenville MI. His involvement in the church and Knights of Columbus reflected his values and provided a foundation for the many roles he embraced within his family and community.
Gary was a devoted husband and father whose presence was a guiding force in the lives of those around him. He shared his love for sports and mentorship through years of service as a baseball coach, Cub Master, and Scout Master through which he shaped young lives with patience and encouragement.
In his leisure time, Gary enjoyed golf and bowling—pastimes that brought him joy and camaraderie with friends and family alike.
Gary is preceded in passing by his father Cleon Dean Hawks, mother Violet Bessie-Jane Willis, sister Gay Furguson, daughters-in-law Vicki Hawks and Barbi Hawks.
Gary is lovingly remembered and survived by his:
Wife – Carol Hawks
Brothers- Fred and George Dickerman, and Dean Hawks.
Children – Karen (Craig) Frye, Richard Hawks, Michael Hawks, Joseph (Fran) Hawks, Nancy (Tammy) Hawks, Gary (Tammy) Hawks jr.; and many grandchildren, step grandchildren, and great grandchildren, each of whom carries forward cherished memories of their time together.
May Gary’s memory bring comfort to those who knew him and serve as a reminder of a life well lived in service to others.
