Gary Joe Lack, 77, of Bakersfield, passed away on March 11, 2026.
Gary was born on September 11, 1948, in Bakersfield, California, to James Allen Lack and Mildred Faye Lack. He spent most of his life in the community he loved and called home.
Gary graduated from South High School before earning a bachelor’s degree in Public Administration from California State University, Bakersfield. He later served his country with honor in the United States Marine Corps during the Vietnam War, completing three years of service before receiving an honorable discharge.
Following his military service, Gary dedicated much of his career to public service as a deputy with the Kern County Sheriff's Office. He later worked as the woodshop manager at the Bakersfield Adult Rehabilitation Center (B.A.R.C.), where he shared his woodworking skills and knowledge with others.
Gary was known for his strong personality. He was funny, mischievous, intense, and never short of conversation. He loved to talk and connect with people, often leaving those around him with a story or a laugh. A man of faith, Gary loved Jesus, read his Bible daily, and attended Laurelglen Bible Church.
Outside of work and church, Gary enjoyed woodworking and bodybuilding, hobbies that reflected both his creativity and discipline.
Gary is survived by his daughter, Kelli (Steven) Bozarth; his son, Danny Lack; his brother, Michael (Paula) Lack; five grandchildren; and two nieces.
He was preceded in death by his parents, James Allen Lack and Mildred Faye Lack.
Gary will be remembered for his faith, his service to his country and community, and the lively spirit he brought to every conversation. He will be deeply missed by those who knew and loved him.
