Gary Grant Wehlage

1936 - 2026

Gary Grant Wehlage, born September 15, 1936, in Sioux Falls, South Dakota, passed away on March 29, 2026, having lived a full and meaningful life rooted in family, the outdoors, and a deep appreciation for the simple things.
In 1959, Gary left South Dakota to attend the University of Illinois in Champaign for graduate study. That fall, he met Nancy Jo Schrader on a blind date, and the two were married on June 6, 1960, beginning a lifelong partnership filled with love, laughter, and shared adventure.
Gary was a respected professor at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, where he devoted his career to teaching, mentorship, and a genuine care for students. As part of the School of Education, he focused his work on helping all students succeed—especially those at risk of being left behind. Through both his teaching and his work, Gary made a lasting impact on students, educators, and the field of education. Upon his retirement, he was honored with emeritus status, a reflection of his distinguished service and lasting contributions.
Gary developed a deep passion for skeet shooting after joining Middleton Sportsmen's Club in the 1970s, going on to build an accomplished competitive career. He earned multiple All-State and All-American honors, along with several major titles, including State Championships. Following his retirement, he devoted more time to the sport and achieved some of his greatest successes. Gary also gave back to the skeet shooting community through leadership roles with the Sauk Prairie Gun Club and the Wisconsin Skeet Shooting Association, leaving a lasting impact on the sport he loved.
Gary and Nancy built their dream home on 60 acres in Portage, Wisconsin. There, they created a life they loved—surrounded by nature, meaningful friendships, and the peace that comes from living simply and well.
Gary was diagnosed with Parkinson's disease in 2014, a challenge he faced with remarkable courage and resilience. His lifelong commitment to staying active—through running, time outdoors, and a love of reading—helped sustain both his physical and mental strength for many years. His determination and quiet strength were an inspiration to all who knew him.
Gary was preceded in death by his parents, Larry and Laura Wehlage.
He is survived by his beloved wife of over 65 years, Nancy; his children, Scott and Julie; his grandchildren, Hunter (Sara), Nicole (Zach), McKenna (Nick), and Noah; and his great-granddaughter, Lily.
Gary will be remembered for his love of the outdoors, his devotion to family, his many talents, and the life he built with Nancy—a life grounded in love, friendship, and a deep appreciation for the world around him.
Memorial contributions may be made to the National Skeet Shooting Association (NSSA-NSCA) Endowment Fund in honor of Gary's lifelong passion for skeet shooting.
