Gene Arthur Gilbert

1936 - 2026

Gene Arthur Gilbert, beloved husband, father, and grandfather, passed away at the age of 89 while surrounded by the love of his family. Gene was born in 1936 in Marshalltown, Iowa, and his remarkable life was shaped by dedication, hard work, and the deep joy he found in the people he loved.
At the age of 5, Gene and his parents moved to Arizona where his mom and dad served with the Salvation Army, supporting various communities across the State. As a boy, Gene was active in Scouts and Salvation Army Church activities. He later attended Phoenix Union High School and distinguished himself as an exceptional basketball player. His talent on the court led to his later induction into the Phoenix Union High School Hall of Fame, an honor that reflected both his skill and his competitive spirit. It was during these high school years that Gene met the love of his life, Joanne “Jody” Reuter, beginning a partnership that would last a lifetime.
Gene went on to earn a degree in Business Administration from Arizona State University, an accomplishment that preceded his service in the United States Army. After completing his military service, Gene and Jody made their home in Jody’s hometown of Phoenix, where they built their life together and raised their two sons, Russell and Cary.
Family was always at the center of Gene’s world. He cherished time with his boys, whether attending YMCA camps, taking them to the hockey rink, or embarking on cherished family camping trips. Some of his happiest memories came from the family’s annual vacations to the Southern California coast—beach days, adventures in Disneyland, and treasured moments of togetherness.
Gene spent his professional career working as an appraiser in the Phoenix area and later proudly served with the Federal Housing Administration (FHA). A lifelong sports enthusiast, Gene held one of the very first season tickets for the Phoenix Suns, faithfully cheering on his hometown team from its earliest days.
In retirement, Gene discovered new joys and creative passions. He was an avid reader and took pleasure in landscaping, brickwork, and the artistry of stained glass. Gene and Jody also continued their love of travel, exploring new places and savoring time spent with their growing family.
Gene is survived by his devoted wife, Jody Gilbert, his sons Russell Gilbert (Jane) and Cary Gilbert (Loretta), and his beloved grandchildren Chris, Grant, and Megan. His legacy lives on in the memories he created, the family he nurtured, and the quiet strength and kindness he carried throughout his life.
He will be deeply missed and lovingly remembered.
