After a two-and-a-half-year battle with cancer, thirty-nine-year-old Genevieve Noami Pickens passed away on Thursday, December 18, 2025, at 4:20 AM CST, surrounded by loved ones.
Born November 6, 1986, the youngest of four siblings, Genevieve (Vievee) learned to be assertive, but also kind and loving, and strongly attached to both family and close friends.
Her earliest passions included music and horseback riding. As an amateur violinist, she joined the Pittsburgh Youth Symphony Orchestra and participated in a performance tour of Eastern Europe, an experience she carried with her throughout her life. Combining her violin skills with motivational methods learned in occupational therapy training proved to be effective in teaching violin to young students.
During the early months of cancer treatment, Genevieve took up painting as a diversion, enjoying artistic expression on small and medium-sized canvases. She was generally accompanied in chemotherapy sessions by family members—some from her adopted hometown of Madison, WI, while others traveled from Pennsylvania, Oklahoma, or Nevada to support her. Genevieve was deeply appreciative of friends and family who helped her through the ordeal of battling an intractable cancer and was deliberate and persistent in expressing her love and appreciation.
Genevieve enjoyed taking long walks in and around public parks, and continued this practice until too weakened by cancer to continue. She also enjoyed the company of animals, including her three cats: Olivia, Teddy (Theoden), and Red—all of whom were especially attentive to her in her final days.
Genevieve is survived by her parents, Stanley and Atsuko Pickens; her sisters, Elizabeth Kalmbach and Priscilla Larson; her brother, Timothy Pickens; and her soulmate, Tiago Berigan.
A memorial/celebration of life service will be held in the Madison area on Saturday, July 4, 2026. Details to be determined. Those interested in attending can text 386-341-9057 to inquire about the specific time and location that will be determined by June 1, 2026.
In place of flowers, those so inclined are encouraged to donate to the Cherokee Marsh Conservation Fund (https://www.cherokeemarsh.org/our-conservation-fund) in commemoration of the hours Genevieve enjoyed hiking the trails.
