Genny Lee Carter, 71, a longtime resident of Amesbury, Massachusetts, passed away on January 1, 2026, after a long illness and is now at rest.
Born on March 19, 1954, in Newton, Massachusetts, Genny lived a life full of compassion, empathy, and generosity.
A graduate of Northeastern University, Genny earned her Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering after 10 years of night school. She worked for over 30 years as a PCB designer specializing mostly in communication systems, starting at a time where there were few to no women working in that field. Among her many impressive projects, she was most proud to have been a part of the Mars Exploration Rover mission through her position at MIT Lincoln Lab and sending a piece of her work to another world. In recognition of her many professional accomplishments and leadership, she was honored as VIP Woman of the Year for 2013–2014 by the National Association of Professional Women.
Genny was known for her generous spirit and deep empathy. She had an open heart for anyone in need and often took in those who were struggling—offering anything from thoughtful listening to a room in her home. Each winter, she handmade hats, gloves, and scarves for a local domestic violence shelter, as well as donating toys to the children living there, so even a holiday in a new place was full of joy and warmth. Her belief that teaching someone a skill was the kindest gift one could give guided much of how she lived; she gave generously of both her time and talents to help others better themselves.
She found joy and purpose in crafting of all kinds and was always picking up a new skill or creative talent. She believed fully that anything someone could need could be made beautifully by hand. Whether quilting detailed patterns, designing sparkling jewelry, crocheting delicate designs, or knitting warm garments for loved ones and strangers alike, she poured love into every piece.
She is lovingly remembered by her daughter Katherine Soares, her granddaughter Hayley Soares, and her grandson Thomas Soares. Her mother, Naomi Warner, preceded her in death.
A Celebration of Life will be held on March 22, 2026, from 12:00 PM to 03:00 PM at The Grog, 13 Middle Street Newburyport, MA. We will be celebrating Genny in the only way she would have wanted - with friends and family, good food, and a stiff drink.
