George Buckingham was born in Oakland, California on October 5, 1939. He passed away peacefully in his sleep, suffering a heart attack, at the age of 83.
George grew up in Northern California and graduated from St. Mary’s High School in 1957. He received his undergraduate degree from St. Mary’s College in 1961 and later earned an MBA from Pepperdine University in 1978.
George served in the U.S. Army from 1965 to 1967, marrying the love of his life, Margy, in 1967, who he met at the Newman Club at Cal Berkeley, where Margy attended college. George and Margy were married 56 years.
George was an Eagle Scout and a strong supporter of scouting his entire life. He was an expert at all things camping, hiking, backpacking, and digging a latrine. He was a Scout Troop leader for many years and helped hundreds of boys learn about the Boy Scouts and gain appreciation for the outdoors. George was happiest after a long hike in the Sierra Nevada mountains, showing off his fire-starting skills and cooking up a can of beans. He gave his children an amazing education in hiking and wilderness survival, and how to quickly move a tent when the river suddenly rises.
George’s career was in administration and management training. He worked for the Contra Costa Water District, Alameda County Water District, Fairchild Semiconductor, and the City of Sacramento. After retiring, George enjoyed exercising, playing golf, taking RV trips throughout the United States, and spending time at the Carmichael Elks Club. He loved a good steak, red wine, and anything covered in gravy.
George was a loving husband and caring father. Always up for a chat and a reassuring point of view. He never met a stranger and was always ready to help a neighbor. He will be missed.
George was preceded in death by his parents, Walter and Katherine Buckingham. He is survived by his wife, Margy, and his children Michael (wife Anne) Buckingham and Ann (husband Matt) Wokas; his eight grandchildren who will greatly miss him- Blakeley, Graydon, Britton, Lachlan, Huntley and Langley Buckingham; and Eddie and Robbie Wokas; his dear Cousin Jill of La Jolla and many nieces, nephews, and dear friends whose lives he touched with warmth, humor, and generosity.
