George E. Carpenter III

1967 - 2026

Fort Myers, FL — George "Jay" E. Carpenter III, 58, of Peabody, MA, passed away suddenly at his home on March 14, 2026.

He was the beloved son of the late George E. Carpenter Jr. and Elizabeth (Tester) Carpenter of Fort Myers, FL and the cherished brother of Laurie Downs of North Port, FL, and Kathryn DiPietro of Beverly, MA. Jay was the devoted father of Christopher Carpenter of Ipswich, MA; Shannon Carpenter of Peabody, MA; Caussandra Jensen of Memphis, TN; and Amanda Ganey of Beverly, MA.

Born and raised in Peabody, Jay was a graduate of Peabody Veterans Memorial High School.

Jay began his lifelong career in public service in 1988 as a correctional officer with the Essex County Sheriff's Department in Massachusetts. Over the next 29 years, he served with dedication, integrity, and deep pride. He supervised staff and correctional facilities across eastern Massachusetts and ultimately rose to the rank of Captain, serving as part of the department's senior command leadership. At the time, Jay received the honor of earning the highest score ever recorded on the Captain's exam. He retired in 2017 after nearly three decades of honorable service to the people of Essex County.

Jay loved the water and found his greatest joy fishing, boating, and spending time on his boat with friends and family. A lifelong boating enthusiast, he was a member of Palmer's Cove Yacht Club in Salem, MA, Danversport Yacht Club in Danvers, MA and the Freedom Boat Club. One of his proudest adventures was captaining his own boat down the entire eastern seaboard from Massachusetts to Florida.

He also had a passion for motorcycles and treasured the many road trips he took with close friends on his Harley-Davidson. A lover of sports cars, Jay recently fulfilled a dream by factory-ordering a brand-new Chevy Corvette.

In addition to his love of the outdoors and the open road, Jay took great pride in his homes. He spent countless hours renovating his family home in Peabody and recently completed the design and construction of a beautiful new home on Pine Island, FL, where he enjoyed the wildlife—especially the exotic birds. Jay also had a lifelong knack for fixing and building, dating back to his high school years when he helped construct his aunt and uncle's home while gaining his vocational experience.

In recent years, Jay purchased a property in Santa Marta, Colombia, where he spent meaningful time with his dear partner, Katerine Quintero, with whom he shared a close and cherished bond.

Jay is survived by his loving mother, Elizabeth; his sister Kathryn and her husband Joseph DiPietro of Beverly, MA; his sister Laurie Downs of North Port, FL; his son Christopher Carpenter of Ipswich, MA; his daughters Shannon Carpenter of Peabody, MA, Cassaundra Jensen of Memphis, TN and Amanda Ganey of Beverly, MA; his granddaughter Kaitlynn Watcons of Memphis, TN; and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his father, George E. Carpenter Jr.

Jay will be profoundly missed by his family, his many friends, and the colleagues and fellow public servants who served alongside him.
